The choice of legendary photographers including Henri Cartier-Bresson and Annie Leibovitz, many of the 20th century’s most defining images were shot on a Leica. Usability, longevity, portability, and quality are just some of the reasons that have made this German camera so coveted, coupled with the fact that Leica lenses are considered the best in the world. Each camera is a work of mechanical and electronic art, a masterpiece of superbly engineered precision instruments on every professional photographer and casual hobbyist wish list. Here are three Leica cameras that top our list.
1. Q Camouflage Edition
Getting what Wired magazine called the “ultimate more-portable shooter for anyone who doesn’t want to lug around a big-bodied DSLR" a cool set of duds, the Leica Q Camouflage special edition gets a nifty makeover with green, red and grey print leatherette. The award-winning camera with its 24MP full-frame sensor and high-speed, classic focal length prime lens allows for fast and intuitive handling, just one of the many technical features which will delight camera boffins. Then, there’s no stopping at the parts where the camera features an integrated viewfinder with a 2.68MP, and delivers quality exposures with low noise at ISO sensitivities at up to 50,000.
However, when it comes to design, the fully loaded compact camera has been pared down to sleek essentials that will even impress Dieter Rams, the godfather of functionalism. The finest materials have employed in its construction to guarantee exceptional endurance while all lettering and the markings on its setting dials are laser-engraved. The thumb rest and diamond pattern of its leathering have been perfectly calibrated to ensure ideal grip, a small detail which clearly illustrates that form and function still go hand in hand at Leica.
The camouflage design is exclusively available in Singapore at all Leica stores.
While Leica is, and has always been associated with serious photography, the whimsical Sofort is proof that Leica can let its hair down when it wants to. The brand’s foray into the world of Instax instant photography not only pushes film photography to the next level, but also echos its competitors’ ethos: that film is very much still relevant till this day. A versatile instant picture camera, Sofort’s special features offer quick and easy access to spontaneous photos that can be seen and shared in seconds. Apart from the selfie mode — a clear nod to the trend that is here to stay — Sofort also offers macro, self-timer, party, action, and double exposure modes, that can be used with both colour, and monochrome films. This model comes in mint, white and orange, each with a colour-matched strap and luxurious cases in black and brown to protect its precious cargo.
3. MP 240P Marina Bay Sands Edition
The remarkable MP 240, touted as the “pinnacle of the Digital M Evolution", was chosen to commemorate Leica’s latest and fourth concept store at The Shoppes at Marina Bay Sands. While camera specifications remain the same as the original M-P Type 240, just 18 units of the special edition were crafted. Each is etched with a silhouette of the iconic MBS skyline on its body, along with a symbol of a lion head symbol (an alternative national symbol of Singapore) on the lens hood. As an added luxurious touch, the camera is clad in silver leatherette sporting a tactile speckled texture that contrasts well against the all-silver Leica Summilux-M 1:1.4/35mm ASPH lens.
