Life’s silver screen moments

Date night ideas are one aplenty in Singapore. A quick search online brings you a list of activities that include art jamming sessions, pottery making, flower arrangement and cooking classes. Not one to rest on its laurels, Mandarin Oriental Singapore has too, designed a date-night package for couples to relive life’s magical moments on silver screens.

Its Movie Moments package (from S$555++) includes a one-night stay in the Marina Bay View room, complimentary movies from its extensive DVD collection, movie snacks (which everyone knows, are a must-have), and a pair of Gold Class tickets to be used at Suntec City’s Golden Village cinema. While making your hotel booking, let the concierge know your preferred movie and timeslot, as the hotel will pre-book the movie tickets on your behalf.

The Marina Bay View room offers a splendid view of the city, but I recommend opting for a Club upgrade, which not only ensures a room on a higher floor (and a bird’s eye view of the skyline), but also access to the Oriental Club.

Check in is at 3pm, and depending on your movie timing, you may either adjourn to Suntec City, or head to the Oriental Club located on the 19th floor for some afternoon tea before proceeding to the swimming pool to soak up the evening glows of the sun.

The Oriental Lounge also serves pre-dinner cocktails and hors d’oeuvres, which you can enjoy before dining in one of the hotel’s seven eateries (additional charges apply). Dolce Vita, the hotel’s poolside restaurant, serves authentic Italian fare, and has recently revamped its menu to include family favourites, and traditional and modern interpretations of its signature Tiramisu.

The night may have fallen, but the party for two has only just begun. Enjoy a soak in the tub, then get comfy in bathrobes as you select your favourite movies from an extensive DVD collection. Romance, thrillers, action, comedy, or even animation films? You name it, the hotel has it. You’ll also be treated to gourmet movie snacks of popcorn, potato and corn chips, and accompanying condiments like sour cream and salsa. Remember to check the room for separate DVD player remote controls, for I forgot to, and ended up having to manually press the buttons on the player.

With the Club’s late check-out at 4pm, sleep to your heart’s content before going to the Oriental Lounge for a late Champagne breakfast. Depending on energy levels, you can also indulge your love for movies, or end the stay on a leisurely note with well-needed spa treatment (additional charges apply) at The Spa at Mandarin Oriental.

Considering this to be a special getaway of sorts, I suggest going all out with The Suite Romance For Two experience. Carried out in one of the spa’s two couple’s suites, the spa begins with a welcome foot ritual and bath, followed by a body scrub using a mix of vanilla and honey sugar. The treatment ends with a full body massage that soothes stiffened joints and muscles (accumulated from the possible lack of movement during your movie marathon) using a mix of essential oils including frankincense, mandarin and ginger.

Now, how’s that for an eventful weekend with Singapore’s iconic skyline as backdrop?

If you’re thinking that DVDs are passé, good news: Mandarin Oriental is working on expanding its in-room amenities to include a digital entertainment system for guests of all ages.

The Movie Moments package is available at Mandarin Oriental Singapore until 31 March, 2017.
