  • Mandarin Oriental, Singapore

From Modern Family’s Claire Dunphy to The Simpsons Marge Simpson, we owe a debt of gratitude to the most important women in our lives (sorry, WAGs, there’s always Valentine’s). We’re talking about mums, of course. They’ve fed us, clothed us, and accompanied us through most of life’s milestones. And while you can technically show your thanks any day of the year – and really, you should – there’s something to be said about celebrating en masse. That said, here are six of the best places to splash out on a meal for mum this Mother’s Day.

1. Sunday Brunch at The Knolls

Capella Singapore
For: health-conscious mums

So mum’s a bit of a health-and-wellness nut: she has more than one gym membership, converted the family to drinking cold-press juices, keeps the kitchen well-stocked with superfoods, and wouldn’t be caught dead without a fitness tracker. But it’s cheat day on 14 May. Take her out to The Knolls at Capella, where the whole family can feast on wholesome Mediterranean fare (from S$148++ per adult). There’ll be entertainment courtesy of a live band. And since mum’s worked so hard to maintain her svelte figure, have fashion illustrator Alessia Landi sketch her portrait. To top it off, the best-dressed, best-matched mother-and-child pair of the day will win attractive prizes.

Date: Sunday, 14 May 2017

2. Saint-Tropez Barbecue Brunch at Lantern

The Fullerton Bay Hotel
For: Francophile mums

So mum makes bi-annual shopping trips to Paris and is somewhat of a regular at Le Negresco in Nice (she loves the property as much for its history as for its art collection). Always immaculately coiffed and turned out, she wouldn’t look out of place at Lantern’s Riviera-themed barbecue brunch (from S$78++ per adult, mothers dine complimentary with a minimum of two paying adults). There, she and the family can indulge in an array of fresh seafood including freshly-shucked oysters and Maine lobsters. Also on the menu: seafood bisque, thyme-scented lamb chops, rock salt-crusted seabass and assorted grilled sausages. With the Marina Bay panorama and free-flow bubbly, it’s the next best thing to being on the Cote d’Azur.

3. Brunch at Dolce Vita

Mandarin Oriental, Singapore
For: Mums who live La Dolce Vita

Hedonism and the continuous pursuit of pleasure is often critiqued, but hey, it’s 2017. With everything that’s going on in the world right now, there’s little need to justify escapism. And if mum is no stranger to the pleasures of a bacchanalian feast, pamper her with brunch at Dolce Vita ($168++ per person). The selection of fine Italian treats includes Canadian oysters, Acquerello Riserva risotto and pan-seared wild barramundi. End with dainty desserts such as Mara des Bois strawberry cheesecake and petite macarons. There’s also a free flow of Ruinart Champagne.

Date: Saturday and Sunday, 13 and 14 May 2017
Time: 12pm — 3pm

If mum hasn’t had enough sugary treats, indulge her sweet tooth with the elegant Cassis Jewel Cake (S$75 for 1kg). It’s filled with blackcurrant confiture, Inaya chocolate cremeux and almond sable. Available for takeaway from 3 to 14 May 2017.

4. Four-course Dinner at Club55

Marina Bay Sands Hotel Singapore
For: Mums who love the high life

Mum was never tight with the purse strings: not when she splurged on that emerald-and-diamond suite, nor when she put you and your siblings through postgrad. She expects nothing less than the best, of course, so give her the best: a four-course dinner (S$138) at Club55. Did we mention it overlooks the city skyline, and comes with a welcome drink? The special menu showcases oyster pearl and foie gras, langoustine soup, and Angus beef short rib or Magret duck.
Meanwhile, the decadent dessert selection features more than 30 cakes, tarts, verrines, pralines, macarons and cookies. It’s as close to perfection as it gets.

Raffles Hotel Singapore
For Mums who love their bubbles

No Mother’s Day gastronomic roundup would be complete without a Champagne brunch (from S$208++ per adult) recommendation. The always reliable Raffles Hotel Singapore has prepared just such a carte du jour. Think fresh seafood the likes of Maine lobsters and Alaskan king crabs, hearty fare such as US Prime cote de boeuf and Welsh lamb saddle, as well as a tantalising spread of cheeses and desserts. All this, washed down with Billecart-Salmon Champagne, of course. If there are kids in tow, they can amuse themselves by making DIY cards for mum with art supplies provided. To complement the occasion, mums will each receive a red rose.

6. Smile Asia Week

The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore
For:Mums with big hearts

So mum’s been somewhat of an activist since her university days, always rallying support for leading social causes. These days, she’s known in her circles as a benefactor, a champion of the arts, and an all-round good Samaritan. Her generosity knows no bounds. Surprise her, then, with a charity cake from The Ritz-Carlton, Millenia Singapore. All proceeds from the specially crafted Valrhona chocolate and banana confection (500g, S$36) will go towards The Smile Mission. This global alliance of independent charities works together to treat facial deformities such as cleft lips and cleft palates. Your magnanimity will bring a smile to another mother’s face, not to mention your own.

Available from 8 to 14 May 2017 at a kiosk in the hotel lobby, 10am to 8pm daily.

Follow on with a five- or eight-course lunch or dinner set (from S$88++ per person) at Summer Pavilion. The menus feature the One Michelin-starred restaurant’s signature dishes like double-boiled superior bird’s nest soup, steamed dong xing grouper fillet, and sauteed Japanese wagyu beef.
