Oscars 2018: Four of the Best Jewels Spotted

Oscars 2018, Gal Gadot

Not just another red carpet affair

The red carpet at the 90th Academy Awards, also known as the Oscars 2018, might not have seen a wave of black gowns and suits like what was witnessed at the Golden Globes in January.

Hollywood’s A-list celebrities turned up in a spectrum of colours – beyond just black – and politically-tinged accessories, turning the Oscars 2018 into a platform for activism beyond the #MeToo and #TimesUp campaigns.

Comedienne Tiffany Haddish donned an embroidered Eritrean gown to honour her father’s birthplace and celebrate her heritage.

Whoopi Goldberg turned up with a red ribbon pinned to her dress. Originally belonging to the late Elizabeth Taylor, Goldberg wore it to honour The Elizabeth Taylor AIDS Foundation.

On a lighter note, the breathtaking selection of jewels that adorned the necklines, earlobes and wrists of celebrities reminded us that even in politically charged times, glamour still has a place.

We pick four that bedazzled us the most.

Bvlgari

Somebody hand Olympic alpine skier Lindsey Vonn a trophy for taking our breath away with this glamorous get-up. She paired this black sparkling gown with accessories that are simply impossible to ignore: Bvlgari’s 1969 necklace in platinum and gold and 1955 earrings in platinum – both in to-die-for rubies and diamonds.

Piaget

It’s not as if this cobalt blue gown worn by actress Jennifer Garner wasn’t striking enough. But Piaget sure knew how to add the right amount of sparkle to her ensemble. Garner donned the Piaget Sunny Side of Life earrings in 18k white gold set with two cushion-cut blue sapphires and 66 diamonds. Of course, it was a no-go without the Piaget Secrets & Lights ring set in blue sapphire and diamonds. Topping off the look: a diamond-set Extremely Piaget Sunlight ring.

Cartier

Oscars 2018 nominee Saoirse Ronan surely melted many hearts with her sweet, feminine outfit. Cartier’s Diamond Collection earrings in platinum and diamonds and vintage ring in white gold and diamonds could do no wrong. It injected the right amount of elegance into her heartwarming baby pink gown.

Tiffany & Co.

We’ve fallen head over heels with this heart-stirring yellow gown that actress/writer/director Greta Gerwig showed up in. She complemented this with a Tiffany & Co. platinum necklace with diamonds, sapphires and moonstones from the 1910-1920 archives. Also seen: a pair of earrings in platinum and diamonds. Rounding off the set was a ring in platinum with a ravishing (almost) 5-carat sapphire and diamonds.  This was from the 2018 Extraordinary Colours of Tiffany Collection. Also not to be missed was the jaw-dropping 27-carat aquamarine necklace worn by Gal Gardot (main picture, above) from the 2018 Tiffany Blue Book collection.

Special Mention: Swarovski

While we didn’t spot any Swarovski accessories on the celebrities, the crystal house still managed to take our breath away. It literally set the stage. Resembling a giant crystal geode, the set was constructed from a mix of metallic elements, mirrored surfaces and crystal – all 45 million pieces of them.
