Where to stay in Singapore: Six Senses Duxton, the latest boutique hotel in Tanjong Pagar

Six Senses Duxton

Instead of the poolside villas that the Six Senses luxury resort chain is known for, expect city-chic rooms and suites done up by British style doyenne Anouska Hempel

Chic hotels continue to sprout up in the buzzy Tanjong Pagar area. The ultra-swish Sofitel Singapore City Centre opened late last year. In 2016, Oasia Hotel Downtown brought its design-led sensibilities – a WOHA-designed building, Patricia Urquiola interiors – to the neighbourhood. On 15 April 2018, Six Senses Duxton – the luxury resort chain’s first-ever urban property – will join the party.

Six Senses properties are sited in some of the world’s most stunning beachfront locales: Fiji, The Maldives and Seychelles to name a few.

Six Senses Duxton promises a totally different vibe altogether. Instead of poolside villas, expect 49 city-chic rooms and suites done up by British style doyenne Anouska Hempel. The former Bond girl-turned designer effectively wrote the book on boutique hotels when Blakes Hotel opened in London in 1978.

Apt that she now lends her name to the hotel, which occupies a row of restored shophouses along Duxton Road. Architecture buffs will be happy to know that the project received the URA Architectural Heritage Award.

To pay tribute to its Chinatown-adjacent location, Hempel sought to inject a Chinois element to the design. This is evident from the get-go: large golden fans; plus black, gold and yellow hues adorn the entrance. A fan of the Chinoiserie style herself, the hotel’s oriental screens and calligraphy wallpaper come from Anouska’s personal collection.

And, get this: there will also be health screenings, consultations and a medicinal herbal dispensary for in-house guests. This comes courtesy of TCM (Traditional Chinese Medicine) physician Professor Zhang Mao Ji of Long Zhong Tang.

Food- and drinks-wise, you can look to Chinese fine-dining restaurant Yellow Pot. There is also an antiquarian-themed lobby bar that serves up the hotel’s signature cocktails. Not that Tanjong Pagar is short on F&B options; just a short stroll from the hotel is one of our favourite watering holes of the moment, Junior.

As part of its opening offer, guests who book online through Six Senses’ website will enjoy 15 per cent savings on the Best Available Rate. The offer is valid across all room and suite categories and includes daily breakfast and WiFi access. This discount is valid for stays from 15 April to 30 June 2018.
