The debut of LoveFrom, Moncler

By Amos Chin 25 September, 2024

The collaboration between LoveFrom and Moncler is founded upon the friendship of the co-founder and CEO, respectively

After stepping down from his long-standing role as chief design officer at Apple, Jony Ive co-founded LoveFrom–creative agency delving into the nexus of design, art, and technology–in 2019. As LoveFrom broadens its reach, so does its array of projects, notably its recent partnership with fashion mammoth Moncler. This collaboration not only marks Ive’s first-ever venture into outerwear but also his renowned design prowess alongside Moncler’s technical expertise.

“Who I work with has become more important to me than what I work on,” professes Ive. “Our collaboration has been wonderfully simple and joyful. We have learnt so much from each other and I am particularly happy this modest collection marks the beginning of a longer term collaboration.”

This outerwear collection transforms Moncler’s innovative spirit into a muse. The line features an exclusive fabric made from high-quality recycled nylon defined by yarn-dyed fibres treated for a matte finish, mimicking the appearance of natural fibre. Manufactured on exceptionally large looms, this technique, also known as taslanised, allows each piece to be crafted from a single fabric panel, ingeniously folded into shape.

The utilitarian design continues to innovate with its structure: the collection comprises three shell garments—a field jacket, a parka, and a poncho—that attach to a central core via the ‘Duo button’, a novel magnetic button system. This ingenious fastener allows for seamless attachment, featuring logos from both LoveFrom and Moncler elegantly engraved on the hardware. Crafted from aluminium, brass, steel, and a heat-resistant magnet, these buttons click together satisfyingly—a detail that captivated Ive during the design phase.

Another hallmark of the partnership is the meticulous attention to detail and a commitment to excellence, infusing a fresh aesthetic into Moncler’s design code. For example, here, Moncler’s traditional comic strip care instructions include Monduck alongside Montgomery, the LoveFrom bear.

Every other element, including labels, branding, buttons, trims, and pullers, has been thoughtfully considered and refined as well. The packaging mirrors the collection’s design philosophy: it is stark, graphic black-on-white and exudes simplicity. Inside, small paper models of the garments demonstrate potential layering options, echoing the single-piece construction of the outerwear. The packaging itself is crafted from 40% recycled paper and assembled by folding, mirroring the fabrication of the jackets.
