David Z Wang had a career in investment banking with Morgan Stanley more than a decade ago – but he called it quits to build his own venture capital company, 33 Capital. Leading his own company allowed him to delve deeply into venture investing and the ways technology can solve problems in Southeast Asia. In 2018, Wang had an epiphany; he realised that there was no fintech solution to drive financial inclusion for the economically vibrant yet underbanked Southeast Asian population. Essentially, 300 million individuals in this region were underbanked and unbanked. This prompted him to establish Helicap.

What are you most proud of about Helicap?

I am most proud of the people: the employees and partners within my company. I cherish the opportunity to find and motivate stellar employees and build a diverse and high-performing corporate culture. I am very proud to build a cutting-edge technological platform that is disrupting traditional investing and financing and is bringing everyone together – a go-to platform for investors and originators!

What motivates you?

The idea of breaking new ground, creating new opportunities for others or making a positive impact on other people’s lives.

If you could change one thing about the world, what would it be and why?

If I could change one thing about the world, it is the feeling of fear people get when they are trying to take a new step in their lives. Often, people need a little nudge or mentorship to take them out of their comfort zone and steer them into new growth opportunities. That is why I try to dedicate time for team mentorship to help my Helicap managers grow in their roles and achieve their full leadership potential.
