Leica releases limited-edition collectibles to celebrate 100 years of the Leica I
Leica’s influence on photography is undeniable. When the Leica I debuted in 1925, it introduced 35mm photography in a compact format, making high-quality cameras more accessible. A hundred years later, the brand celebrates this milestone with a curated collection of accessories that honours its legacy and craftsmanship.
As part of the celebration, Leica has collaborated with renowned brands to produce limited-edition collectibles. One of the standout releases is the Steiff for Leica collection, featuring the Elsie and Ernst collector’s teddy bears. Named after key figures in Leica’s history, these handmade bears are produced in a limited run of 500 pieces each. A third bear, Cuddle, designed for a wider audience, will be available from May 2025 onwards.
In partnership with Graf von Faber-Castell, Leica has also introduced a selection of writing instruments. The Perfect Pencil, engraved with Ernst Leitz II’s statement, “Ich entscheide hiermit: Es wird riskiert” (“I hereby decide: We will take the risk”), pays tribute to his decision to push forward with the Leica I despite the uncertainties of mass production. The collection also includes the Perfect Pen, a ballpoint pen finished in a sleek monochrome design.
Beyond these collaborations, Leica has also designed a range of anniversary accessories, including a 3D wooden puzzle of the Leica I, a crafting set with paper cutouts of the Leica M, sterling silver keyrings, a Leica-branded magnifier, and a chromed soft release button for select cameras.
Besides these centenary-commemorative products, Leica fans and collectors also have plenty more to look forward to. The German manufacturer will be hosting international events in cities such as New York, Tokyo, and Milan, during which Leica Galleries worldwide will showcase works from leading photographers, culminating in an anniversary week at Leica’s headquarters in Wetzlar in June.
