Plantaray Rum’s Sealander brings the best of Barbados, Mauritius and the Fiji Islands together

By Hannah Choo 27 July, 2024

Plantaray Rum’s Sealander is a seamless trifecta of each island’s distinctive qualities and the distillery’s pioneering approach to rum-making

Sweet and delicious, with the strength of a pirate’s arm, rum should be more appreciated than it currently is. For the uninitiated, Plantaray Rum is the product of a passionate producer by the name of Alexandre Gabriel. Recognised as one of the world’s six leading rum CEOs by the Ultimate Awards and RumLab in 2023, Gabriel is also the man behind West Indies Rum Distillery in Barbados and a co-owner of the Long Pond and Clarendon distilleries in Jamaica.

Every expression at Plantaray Rum features of the best of a specific terroir—local flavours and production styles, for instance—and thanks to a centuries-old tradition, it is double-aged in ex-Ferrand casks in the southwest of France. The awards the distillery has received are numerous, and hearts it has won, aplenty.

New to us is Plantaray’s Sealander, a release that allows you to travel the world, one sip at a time. Shaped by the traditions of Barbados, Mauritius and the Fiji Islands together, the rum is a seamless trifecta of each island’s distinctive qualities and Plantaray Rum’s pioneering approach to rum-making. Barrels produced by the Rum Co. in Fiji add intensity and fruitiness, while the ageing process by the shoes of Barbados’ Brighton Beach brings elegant, vanilla notes to the overall mouthfeel. The third rum from the Saint Aubin Distillery in Mauritius, on the other hand, adds on the herbal, earthy notes that you might discover in your sip. The result? A gentle and rich nose that leads to a delicate palate of honey, liquorice and beeswax, and a long, lingering finish of cooked apple and dried banana.
