More than a century and a half later, Penhaligon’s remains as relevant as ever
They say dream big, and that was exactly what Penhaligon’s founder, William Penhaligon did. Despite the uncertainty of what the future might bring, the eponymous founder of the fragrance house took a leap of faith; in the late 1860s, he left Cornwall for London to materialise his vision to be part of Britain’s exciting wave of innovation.
Penhaligon opened a barber shop on Jermyn Street, which quickly became a sought-after destination for gentlemen, arrivistes, and even the Shah of Persia, all seeking modern grooming services. However, Penhaligon didn’t exactly get his flowers for his barbering skills. Instead, it was a serendipitous encounter that would set him on a transformative path.
Inspired by the Turkish baths on the same street, the Cornish barber created his debut fragrance, Hammam Bouquet. Paying homage to the exotic baths next door, the scent marked the brand’s entry into the world of perfumery and launched Penhaligon’s to prominence.
After William’s passing, his son Walter Penhaligon continued his father’s legacy with great success. He introduced Blenheim Bouquet, a bespoke fragrance that gained immense popularity over the years, attracting notable admirers such as Winston Churchill. The brand’s prestige was further cemented with the awarding of three Royal Warrants—official recognition from the British monarchy, signifying a brand’s excellence and its status as a regal choice.
The art of British wit and craftsmanship
What makes Penhaligon’s so enduring is its unwavering commitment to the artistry of perfumery. The house’s perfumers are artisans, crafting each scent with the same meticulous care and attention to detail that William once did.
In every bottle of Penhaligon’s perfume, there is a story waiting to be told—whether it evokes an exotic journey, the crispness of a British morning, or the essence of nature captured in its purest form. From the delicate florals of Lily of the Valley to the bold spices of Juniper Sling, each fragrance is a work of art designed to transport the wearer to another time or place, evoking emotions and memories with every spritz.
Today, Penhaligon’s stands as a beacon of understated luxury. Though the brand has expanded globally, its roots reamain firmly planted in its British heritage. The elegant boutiques, with their rich wood interiors and ornate displays, offer a tactile connection to the past while providing a sanctuary for the modern fragrance lover. The brand has also embraced the digital age, allowing a new generation of fragrance aficionados to experience the brand through a variety of immersive online experiences. Bespoke fragrance services are also available, allowing individuals to work with expert perfumers to create a custom scent, a personal signature that is entirely their own.
Yet, despite its expansion into new territories and its adoption of modern technology, Penhaligon’s dedication to quality and craftsmanship remains unchanged. The brand’s timeless appeal lies in its ability to evolve while staying true to the principles set forth by its founder more than a century ago.
