The Lange of choice for the discerning jet-set, now in platinum
It has been said that the best watches are the ones that can be recognised five paces away. This is certainly true of the inimitable Lange 1, which looks unlike anything else with its off-centred dials and large outsized date display. Endowed with a two-time zone function, however, the watch’s fame has literally gone global.
Though aesthetically atypical, the Lange 1 lends itself very well to the two-time zone display: the larger main sub-dial shows the local time, and the smaller one, the away time.
However, as it is with any Lange creation, the Lange 1 Time Zone isn’t content to be a regular travel watch. The watch is souped up with complex mechanisms designed for ease of use. For instance, each time display comes with its own day/night indicator. The watch is also equipped with a city disc that is linked to the small second-time zone dial, which the user can select via a pusher at the bottom left of the case.
Introduced in 2005, the Lange 1 Time Zone was upgraded in 2020 with a new movement that was built from scratch, along with slight design tweaks. The day/night indicators were repositioned to the centre of the sub-dials for more discreet yet intuitive read-off.
Another small but practical improvement came in the form of the daylight savings time (DST) display. Indicated via a small pointer with window at five o’clock, the display turns red when the chosen city on the outer disc uses DST, hence alerting the user to adjust the time zone accordingly.
The class of 2020 Lange 1 Time Zone came in three versions, all in 41.9mm cases: white gold with black dial, yellow gold with champagne dial, and pink gold with white gold. Now that global borders are fully open and continent-crossing is back in full swing, Lange finds it an opportune time to welcome the latest iteration, a Lange 1 Time Zone for 2023 in platinum case with rhodium-colored dial, paired with a black alligator strap.
Available only in Lange boutiques, the new model exudes an air of subtle luxury that is all the rage these days. But try on the watch and you will literally feel its weight and gravitas.
Like its forebears, the Lange 1 Time Zone in platinum’s unassuming yet commanding presence complements its technical refinement. Equipped with the same features and attributes as the 2020 models, the new iteration will fit right at home—and abroad—accompanying the insatiable jet-set as horizons beckon anew.
