Robb Report Singapore Thought Leader: Tony K Tan, founding director of Smthgood

By Robb Report Singapore 9 September, 2024

“There is always someone from whom you can learn and gain fresh perspectives.” – Tony K Tan

More than a buzzword, sustainable fashion has become an increasingly urgent need, especially to its proponents who are seeking a transformative approach to consumerism. “While prioritising the bottom line is essential for successful businesses, I have always believed that this focus can and should coexist with doing good to achieve a double bottom line,” professes Tony K Tan, founder of Smthgood.

The multifaceted entrepreneur, who is also the head of a strategic lending team at an international bank, sees the detrimental effects of fast-fashion production—which includes microplastic pollution and accounting for about 10 per cent of global emissions—as cries for help.

During COVID-19, Tan saw an opportunity to tackle these problems head-on with an innovative concept: Smthgood. An online curated marketplace and styling app, it is designed to empower a community in combating climate change.

Smthgood’s approach is grounded in thorough research on the shift towards conscious consumption and changes in online purchasing behaviours. By identifying pain points through empirical and qualitative data, this profit-for-purpose social commerce platform works with eco-conscious merchants, provides educational content on sustainable practices, and offers tools that enable consumers to “Look Good, Do Good, and Feel Good.”

What is your approach towards professional evolution?

You can learn valuable insights from everyone, from senior team members to interns and job candidates. The key is to maintain an open mind and appreciate the diversity of perspectives, which enriches your life journey.

How do you deal with setbacks?

Pretty much got this down pat. I go for a long run to boost endorphins and clear my head. Then, I reflect honestly on what went wrong and use that knowledge to move forward. This routine never fails to get me back up on my feet.

What is the growth potential for eco-conscious fashion start-ups?

I am optimistic about the rise of alternatives to fast consumption. Brands on Smthgood are already using innovative leather alternatives like leaves, apples, and pineapple skin. As conscious consumption grows, supply chains will become more cost-efficient, balancing the economics between fast fashion and conscious brands.

What are you most proud of with what you do?

For me, it is my constant pursuit of knowledge, defined by pushing myself to do something different that yields tangible professional and personal fulfilment. My journey spans from public relations to investment banking in various roles, and now balancing my banking career with my purpose-driven entrepreneurial venture, Smthgood.

What is the most important value in life?

I consider “love” a fundamental value because it permeates every aspect of life, encompassing positive emotions, kindness, and inspiring selflessness. This belief is perfectly captured by Charles Dickens’ quote, “A loving heart is the truest wisdom”. I cherish it so much that it’s on my Instagram handle.
