“The work we’re doing has the power to reshape the future, making it more sustainable for generations to come.” – Ian Chew
Who would’ve thought that carbon emissions generated by the internet are comparable to that of the aviation industry? Unfortunate, but it’s true. According to estimates, the carbon footprint of our gadgets, the internet, and systems supporting the net account for about 3.7 per cent of global greenhouse emissions. In comparison, aviation accounts for about 2.5 per cent. Technoprenuer Ian Chew, however, believes that companies can take a step towards changing that. His startup, Greenie Web, aims to change the narrative by bringing our focus to digital decarbonisation.
Greenie Web’s key offering is a Digital Carbon Emissions Calculator and Rectifier, which helps identify, analyse and calculate a company’s digital footprint, before recommending suggestions for decarbonisation. For instance, after analysing the frontend and backend of a website, the programme may suggest actions such as compressing images, reducing animation frame rates, or optimising the webpage code.
Chew’s groundbreaking technology has earned Greenie Web accolades like the Best Digital Decarbonisation Company at the 2024 Singapore Business Awards. In helping businesses align with net zero goals, Greenie Web aims to do more than just green the internet; it intends to shape the future of sustainable digital practices worldwide.
Describe a defining moment in your career.
It was a simple Google search. I was conducting research to understand the competitive landscape before incorporating my company, and I discovered to my surprise–and horror–that no company in the Asia-Pacific region was working to decarbonise the digital sector on a scalable level. This struck me profoundly. It was at that moment I understood the critical importance of the work I was undertaking.
How do you overcome setbacks?
I find it crucial to look both inward and outward. Looking outward, I assess external factors that are beyond my control and consider how I might mitigate their impact in the future. Inwardly, I reflect deeply on what could have been done better or improved. The self-assessment is vital for growth.
Do you have a hidden talent or hobby?
Fencing! I practised the sport in my younger days, and hope to return to it in the future. The discipline and subtlety of fencing taught me the importance of balance–not just physically, but also in life. Every move is calculated, and every action has a purpose, much like the decisions made in our personal and professional lives.
What is a value of utmost importance to you?
Perseverance. I constantly face the challenge of breaking through established paradigms and introducing fresh, innovative concepts. This journey is often mentally and emotionally taxing. But perseverance is the force that propels me forward.
