The Balvenie has just announced a rather significant new release of three cask releases, The Balvenie Fifty Collection–one that’s sure to pique the interest of serious whisky collectors and connoisseurs
With just 125 bottles per edition released each year, how could it not? A trilogy of extremely rare expressions, each edition of The Balvenie Fifty Collection showcases the legacy of craftsmanship at the Speyside distillery over the last 50 years, offering a peek into The Balvenie’s rich legacy of innovation and artistry.
Going back to 1973, led by its former malter master David Stewart, the craftspeople of Balvenie came together to fill the first cask, which kickstarted the five decades of watchful stewardship and marked the beginning of The Balvenie Fifty Collection’s journey. The First Edition, launching this year, is a unique single cask expression (cask number 8720) that was aged in a European oak refill butt. “Using a refill butt for the First Edition in this collection provides us with a distinctive flavour thread that will run through our next two releases, demonstrating the spectrum of flavours and aromas in our aged spirit,” says Kelsey McKechnie, malt master at The Balvenie. “It is a celebration of our legacy, our passion, and our unwavering commitment to producing some of the finest whiskies in the world.”
The First Edition promises an intricate dance of deep fruits, cassis, and candied apricots, layered with delicate cedar and warming nutty spice on the nose. On the palate, expect caramelised fruits and rich spice mingling with soft vanilla, a touch of ginger, and a citrusy zing. An American oak hogshead filled in 1973 will be married to the first for the Second Edition (to be released in 2025), with the trilogy culminating in 2026 with a final Edition of another American oak barrel filled in 1974 joining the marriage.
The Balvenie Fifty Collection embodies the distillery’s dedication to producing exceptional whiskies, and this commitment extends to its presentation–each bottle is housed in exquisite packaging, made up of over a hundred different elements, including four different layers of wood constructed in a helix structure. A beautifully crafted 14 carat gold plated brass display completes the presentation.
The first Edition of The Balvenie Fifty trilogy, bottled at 52.3% ABV, will be available in limited quantities across Southeast Asia markets. Drink responsibly.
