The low-down

With the immersive Australian rainforest experience, complete with animatronic kangaroos and giraffes for kicks, Surrey Hills Grocer isn’t exactly the definition of luxury. But the fact that you can dine with your pet here is one for sure. At Surrey Hills Grocer’s largest outlet, with the menu designed for the entire family, communal dining is encouraged from morning till night. Expect freshly made pasta, crisp Roman pizza and plenty of quality pet meals, such as the Kangaroo Bowl, made with all the good stuff: calcium carbonate, salmon oil and kelp powder.

What’s worth ordering?

Definitely the Clam Aqua Pazza, a heartwarming broth rich in fresh clam, garlic, capers and dill, with thick slices of foccacia on the side for dipping. Do also order the “Hokkien Mee” if you are a fan of the iconic Singaporean dish done with a twist (malfadine pasta coated in prawn bisque, lard, grilled prawn, sambal and ikura), and the Australian Bass Straits Sirloin, served with gremolata, pepper relish, buttery mash and broccolini.

What else is there to know?

St. Ali coffee is available on the menu and at the boutique, for those suffering withdrawals from the best of Melbourne’s cafe culture scene. Look forward to a selection of pantry products curated by St. Ali, such as Chotto Motto Crispy Chilli Oil, St. Ali x Young Henry Coffee Gin and chemical-free St. Ali Decaf Capsules. There’s also a dedicated pet section filled with the best kind of treats for the best friend man can ever have.
