A private botanical sanctuary at Aman Beverly Hills

By Robb Report Singapore 23 September, 2025

Surrounded by the bustle of the city, Aman Beverly Hills introduces a rare blend of privacy, calm, and lush greenery

Situated at the intersection of Wilshire and Santa Monica Boulevards, a new kind of oasis is taking root. Aman Beverly Hills, the brand’s forthcoming urban retreat and residences, is defined not only by its architecture but by something more elemental: gardens.

Opening in 2027 as part of the One Beverly Hills development, Aman’s first urban hotel and residences on the US West Coast will unveil its signature brand of understated luxury and something wholly unique: private botanical gardens, an immersive, living landscape designed to transform the experience of city life.

A sanctuary in the city

The private gardens offer a quieter, more intimate retreat, a lush counterpoint to the exuberance of public gardens. Here, the frenetic pace of Beverly Hills dissolves into a world of winding woodland paths, shaded groves, and meadows. One might linger by a cascade in the morning, gather friends beneath an olive canopy at dusk, or retreat to a balcony alive with flowering shrubs.

“The underlying spirit behind Aman Beverly Hills’ gardens is to create a sense of tranquillity and rootedness that comes from being immersed in the landscape. The gardens are a retreat from the fast pace of modern life, an invitation to slow down and breathe. They create spaces that feel restorative, deeply connected to nature, and timeless in character,” explains landscape architect Mark Rios, founder of RIOS, an international design collective shaping One Beverly Hills alongside Foster + Partners and Kerry Hill Architects.

California’s garden tradition has always been layered, eclectic, and bold. From Mission-era orchards of olive, citrus, and grapevine to the grand estates of early Hollywood, the landscapes here were shaped by Mediterranean influences, tiled courtyards, Moorish fountains, rose gardens, and Persian pools. In Beverly Hills, Robinson Gardens and Montecito’s fantastical Lotusland became horticultural touchstones— living theatres where artists, actors, and visionaries staged their own botanical worlds.

Aman Beverly Hills’ private gardens draws from this vivid lineage but reinterprets it for the 21st century. Palm groves recall the 1930s glamour of Southern California, while oak woodlands, meadow plantings, and canyon-inspired ravines reflect the region’s native ecologies. It is a layered, forward-thinking narrative that balances cultural richness with ecological responsibility. “Aman celebrates place. For Aman Beverly Hills, we wanted to give guests the authentic experience of discovering how a Southern California landscape feels from an emotional and cultural perspective,” says John Pearson, studio director and landscape architect of RIOS. “At the heart of this vision is what we call the California Drape, a living canopy that blankets the site in a continuous botanical layer and links courtyards, terraces, and rooftops into one unified landscape.”

Inspired by Southern California’s golden hillsides and coastal sage scrub, the drape folds over stone, weaves among fronds and pines, and lifts skyward to crown rooftops with lush edges that blur the boundary between city and nature.

Immersion through nature

Each garden sequence tells its own story. Guests and residents first arrive through the Aman Palm Gardens, where filtered light slips through fronds, creating a dappled calm that transitions from the city’s intensity into Aman’s world of serenity. From there, pathways lead through shaded corridors of pine and oak, echoing the landscapes of the neighbouring Los Angeles Country Club.

The Club Garden unfolds as a woodland border, complete with fire pits, dappled light, and intimate dining spaces beneath a canopy of live oaks and Arbutus trees. The Hotel Garden opens into a meadow of grasses and wildflowers, framing tranquil pools shaded by olive trees. Secluded courtyards, fern glens, and even a theatrical Japanese restaurant garden reveal themselves along the way, each offering moments of surprise, colour, and stillness.

Aman Residences, Beverly Hills extend this vision skyward. Balconies and rooftops are conceived as miniature gardens, each with its own planting palette, from shaded fern groves to sunny, flower-filled edges. More than 500 trees, along with drought-tolerant species and Mediterranean classics, connect private living spaces seamlessly with the broader botanical landscape.

“The garden gives Aman residence owners and guests a destination and a journey, whether it is a morning walk with coffee or a sunset escape. Those who call Aman home and its guests become immersed in this environment and experience its healing qualities while learning about the authentic landscapes of Southern California,” says Rios.

Sustainability and stewardship

Despite its richness, the garden is designed with restraint. Water sustainability anchors the vision: drought-tolerant natives, reclaimed water systems, and storm runoff capture ensure the landscape thrives without burdening the environment. Moisture- sensing technologies and careful sun- pattern analysis shape plantings that are both ecological and enduring.

“The entire landscape runs on collected rainwater and reclaimed grey water; no city potable water is used for irrigation. We’ve reinterpreted the lavish landscapes of the past through a climate-responsive lens so that the gardens still feel lush and refined while being more sustainable. The project’s trees form an urban forest that captures carbon and provides shade and habitat. The result is a landscape that’s both beautiful and ecologically responsible,” says Pearson.

What ultimately distinguishes Aman Beverly Hills’ private gardens, however, is its exclusivity. Reserved only for residence owners, hotel guests, and Aman Club members, it embodies the brand’s philosophy of privacy and belonging—preserving the gardens as an intimate sanctuary; an oasis within the city that welcomes the most discerning of visitors.
