The new Saxonia Thin in Onyx exudes contemporary refinement
Even the most reserved collector must admit a flicker of satisfaction when someone notices the watch on their wrist. A timepiece, after all, is a small yet deliberate expression of one’s sensibilities. It’s fair to assume, then, that those drawn to the elegant, understated, and inherently sophisticated design of A. Lange & Söhne’s Saxonia Thin collection possess (or at least aspire to embody) those same qualities.

With the unveiling of the German watchmaker’s latest Saxonia Thin, now sporting a deep onyx dial, we might also add a penchant for dressing to the nines to that equation. This new timepiece carries the same hallmarks that defined the original Saxonia Thin when it was first introduced in 2011: a nonchalantly elegant dial free of numerals or complications, slender gold baton indices, and a lean, sculpted case.
And while the overall composition of the Saxonia Thin has always possessed an understated allure, the addition of a black onyx dial gives this iteration a more formal appeal. The dial, a deep, dark, and mirror-smooth surface, imbues the timepiece with a sense of stateliness, making it appear perfectly at home under a tuxedo cuff or a linen shirt.

Accentuating this effect is the same svelte silhouette and balanced proportions that have always been central to the Saxonia Thin collection. Instead of the original 37 mm, however, the timepiece now comes in a 40 mm Honeygold or platinum case. While that might sound a touch large for a traditional dress watch, its slender height, just 6.2 mm, allows it to achieve a delicate balance. The effect is subtle: a timepiece that feels more contemporary in its proportions without diminishing the collection’s essential restraint.

This restraint, however, is expressed differently in the watch’s two variations. The first, rendered in A. Lange & Söhne’s proprietary Honeygold, radiates a gentle warmth that exudes refinement. The warm tone of the 40 mm Honeygold case complements the dark onyx, giving the watch a sense of depth and richness.

The platinum version, meanwhile, tempers the deep black of the dial with silvery clarity. Its cooler tone heightens the onyx’s sheen, lending the watch a clean and restrained visage that oozes both contrast and control.
Powered by the same hand-wound calibre L093.1 that has long defined the Saxonia Thin, the movement is exquisitely finished and boasts a 72-hour power reserve.
