Date Night: Bar Kap is the newest bar on the block, with a twist

By Weixian Low 1 September, 2026

A cocktail bar inside one of Singapore’s most storied heritage homes already sounds like the setup for a memorable night out. But Bar Kap lingers in our minds for more than just its drinks

For one, there is the romance of its chambers and carved interiors, the clever way each cocktail draws from the history of The House of Tan Yeok Nee. Then there is, in my case, the rather literal twist at the end of the evening: an ankle sprain sustained after one too many excellent drinks, and one misjudged step on the way out.

What’s the story?

The twist, fortunately, is not just my ankle.

Bar Kap is housed within The House of Tan Yeok Nee, the last of Singapore’s Four Grand Mansions, and that sense of history lends the bar a narrative depth most new openings would kill for. Rather than simply occupying a very handsome and very old building, Bar Kap leans fully into its setting, turning the mansion’s past lives into the backbone of the experience within. The drinks programme is built around the house’s various eras, from the time of its original owner, the Teochew merchant Tan Yeok Nee, to its later chapters as a residence, a school, and eventually, a traditional Chinese medicine clinic.

That could all have felt a little too reverent, too museum-like. Instead, the bar gets the balance right; the space feels intimate and atmospheric, rather than intimidating or theatrical. Its main hall is dressed with restored original timber beams and intricate carvings overhead, while mirrors and reflective surfaces throw the low light around the room in a way that softens the grandeur. A Y-shaped console anchors the room and keeps the energy conversational, while elevated booths nod to the intimacy of Chinese teahouses. Elsewhere, private rooms unfold with distinct personalities: one evokes an old train carriage, another a traditional TCM apothecary lined with clay-ageing vessels.

Name me some good cocktails.

The bar’s cocktail menu is extensive, but stronger in its storytelling. With each drink drawing on a chapter of the building’s history, it gives the experience a sense of cohesion, much like you’re tasting a little piece of the house’s past.

The standout for me was the aptly named Lights Out, a (very strong) martini variation served tableside with gin, secco vermouth, and mandarin, then finished with pandan oil. It is elegant, fragrant, and dangerously easy to keep returning to–which may or may not explain the less-than-graceful ending to my night.

Pepper Peddler is another strong pick, combining baijiu, gin, and makgeolli with citrus, pepper, and a firewater tincture for a bright and gently fiery highball. Mai Ban, meanwhile, leans playful: a dessert-style sour with raspberry, vodka, coconut, and a housemade lollipop garnish.

What else is on the menu?

The food menu is best approached as a supporting act rather than the main attraction. Do not come expecting a padded, full-scale dinner spread; Bar Kap’s culinary offering is more about polished bites designed to complement the cocktails, which remain the stars of the show.

If there is one must-order, it is the Mee Kapitan. Rich with minced pork, shrimp paste, pork lard, sakura ebi, chives and a spicy mala sauce, it is deeply savoury and satisfying; the sort of dish you will be glad to have ordered after a round or two. For lighter options, the Savoury Granita with salmon roe, yuzu granita, and wasabi mayo sounds like (and is) a bright opener, while the HTYN Salad offers crunch and lift through black fungus, bamboo shoot, cordyceps, and a spicy-sour peanut dressing. Small plates such as the Golden Spring Rolls and Sesame Pot Sticker are easy table additions at the beginning of the night.
