In a perfect encapsulation of the East-meets-West success story, Charles Doig’s invention of the pagoda-styled kiln helped to revolutionise the whisky-making process, both aesthetically and in terms of circulating infused smoke into the malting process.
Glenfarclas’ own pagoda kiln now serves as inspiration for its Pagoda Reserve Series, which honours Doig’s ingenious ventilation system and its sloping pagoda roof – a nod to the temples of the Far East that fuelled his designs.
This Pagoda Reserve Trilogy, of which only 100 sets exist in the world, comprises three bottles – Brass, Silver and Gold – distilled in the years 1971, 1967 and 1956 respectively. Boasting an age of 43, 48 and 59 years, all of them were bottled in 2015, presenting a marvellous opportunity for collectors and whisky connoisseurs alike.
