Alila is introducing an intimate onsen retreat to Hakone in 2028, breaking into the Japanese market for the first time

By Robb Report Singapore 1 July, 2026

Alila Sengokuhara Hakone will feature 60 guestrooms, each with its own natural hot spring bath

Mark your calendars for this 2028. The Alila brand is making its debut in Japan, bringing its signature style of mindful luxury to Sengokuhara, a highland district tucked away within the Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park. A tranquil escape from urban life, it is home to a wealth of hot springs, forested ridges, art museums and panoramic views of Mt Kintoki.

Soon it will be home to the Alila Sengokuhara Hakone, a luxury retreat that will live in harmony with nature. Designed by the internationally acclaimed Kengo Kuma and Associates, the property is envisioned as an architectural journey that moves with the land. Rooted in sensitivity to topography, natural light and material expression, built forms will follow the site’s elevation changes, ringing in the surrounding forest and mountains as part of the guest experience.

The main experience, however, will be shaped by one of Japan’s most treasured traditions—the onsen. All 60 guestrooms will feature a natural hot spring bath, allowing people to soak in the restorative qualities of Hakone’s thermal waters in private. Beyond that, guests are also encouraged to take a breather on the yoga deck, and partake in Alila Moments, immersive cultural and nature experiences designed to reveal the true soul of a place.
