Set in Chiang Rai’s lush highlands, the Mekong Explorer Tent brings immersive, conservation-focused luxury to Anantara Golden Triangle
As luxury travel continues to shift toward experiences that are immersive, responsible, and rooted in place, many travellers are moving away from traditional five-star stays in favour of experiences that offer a deeper sense of connection. The Mekong Explorer Tent, newly launched by Anantara Golden Triangle Elephant Camp & Resort in Northern Thailand, appears designed with that shift in mind.
Set on a forested hillside in Chiang Rai, just four kilometres from the Golden Triangle where Thailand, Laos, and Myanmar meet, the two-bedroom tented retreat offers panoramic views over the Mekong River and surrounding jungle. More poignantly perhaps, it overlooks the elephant pastures of the Golden Triangle Asian Elephant Foundation, home to 20 rescued elephants. Those attuned to animal conservation efforts will be glad to know that the foundation is integrated into the resort’s operations, offering guests the chance to observe the animals in an ethical, non-intrusive setting.
The tent itself spans 75 square metres, including a 22-square-metre private balcony, and is built with privacy, comfort, and regional character at its core. Each bedroom features an oversized king bed and an en-suite bathroom, with interiors finished in leather, wood, and Jim Thompson textiles. Details are considered and local—sustainable teas from Sawanabondin, chocolates from Kad Kakao, snacks developed in collaboration with DoiTung, and a traditional Praewahilltribe bag help root the experience in Northern Thai culture.
Extending off the main living spaces are two private terraces, each equipped with an infinity pool and an outdoor soaking tub that offer uninterrupted views. Designed for both couples and families, the tent accommodates up to three adults and one child, or two adults and two children.
Each stay includes arrival by traditional longtail boat, full-board dining, unlimited non-alcoholic drinks, and access to the Hall of Opium Museum. Guests also have the option of one curated daily experience, which include a forest walk alongside elephants, a Northern Thai cooking class with a local market visit, a private yoga or Pilates session, or a 60-minute spa treatment.
