Can’t make it to Kyoto this year? The luxury hotel on Sentosa Island brings the prefecture to us instead. Warning: Come with an empty belly
We’ve barely eased ourselves into 2019, and we’re already attending lo heis and food tastings for Chinese New Year. And if that isn’t already food overload, Capella Singapore — in addition to its Valentine’s Day and Lunar New Year offerings — has collaborated with the Kyoto Prefectural Government to bring us a 10-day A Taste of Kyoto food festival. Not that we’re complaining, of course, given that excess is the new luxury.
The luxury resort is working with two esteemed Japanese chefs to dream up two very different dinners. Each will showcase his work for five days at the 20-seater Chef’s Table restaurant to present the very best of Kyoto.
The Beauty of Kaiseki, 9 to 13 January 2019
Chef Yozo Ueda gets the ball rolling with an eight-course kaiseki menu. The chef-owner of Ankyu — a two Michelin-star restaurant that seats just six diners each night — will take guests through his signature dishes such as Persimmon with Sesame Paste, Ebi-Imo spring roll and a roasted chestnut ice cream sandwich.
Savour Kyoto’s Finest Sushi, 16 to 20 January 2019
For those who prefer sashimi and sushi rolls, we’d suggest attending the second installment of the two-part food festival. You’ll be served (and entertained) by chef Akira Umehara, chef-owner of Sushidokoro Man, whose specialties include grilled mackerel, grilled Kyoto beef and other signature hand rolls.
Both menus are priced at $250++ per person, with dinner starting from 7pm.
