Chanel Haute Joaillerie Sport: a jewellery collection with a sporty allure

By Amos Chin 18 June, 2024

The “Haute Joaillerie Sport” collection combines elegance and performance through aesthetics, technique, and an exceptional selection of gemstones

The “Sport” atelier within Chanel is instrumental to the evolution of the Maison, with its focus on movement and body awareness remaining integral to the house’s identity. This dedication is epitomised in the new Chanel Haute Joaillerie Sport collection, where refined lines echo the anatomical reality of the body, much like sportswear.

“I was inspired by Chanel’s sporty style, which is such an integral part of the house’s history: the elegance of the line and the freedom of movement,” emphasised Patrice Leguéreau, director of the Chanel Fine Jewellery Creation Studio.

An example of movement takes form in the chevron motif that evokes rhythm and speed; the volumes are tapered, contours are clean and smooth, while the lines of colours juxtapose with the glistening gemstones.

Speaking of which, this collection boasts the most beautiful gemstones ever presented by Chanel, showcasing the hues of the precious stones in all their vivid, luminous intensity. The tour de force, a set of five Kashmir sapphires, takes the cake–birthed from years of research.

Beyond the gemstones, technical savoir-faire creates a signature aesthetic. Connection systems form graphic flat surfaces, while quick-release fittings, inspired by sports equipment, become central design elements. Noteworthy examples include a karabiner reshaped into the iconic number 5, a swivel clasp inspired by the 2.55 bag, and an array of buckles and loops.

Another standout: the motifs and graphic design that pay homage to Gabrielle Chanel’s symbols in a sporty rendition. The number 5 appears in Chronometer typography, the lion in a coat of arms, and the star as a symbol of victory, while the Chanel signature is ingeniously incorporated into the designs. The iconic quilted motif, reimagined in the style of high-performance fabrics, becomes a supple mesh adorned with sporty elements. A specially developed “sport cord” tube chain further enhances the collection’s versatility and lightweight design, celebrating freedom of movement.

The collection’s blend of precious and high-tech materials amplifies its functionality. Aluminium, both lightweight and durable, enhances practicality; carbon fibre, with its low density and high resistance, creates an ultra-lightweight sport cuff; and lacquer expands the colour palette to perfectly match the hues of the precious stones.

A celebration of the sporty allure deeply rooted in the history of Chanel, the “Haute Joaillerie Sport” collection combines audacity, unfettered creative freedom, technical mastery and outstanding gemstones– conceived to magnify the freedom of the body and the elegance of movement.
