The second release of Dr. Chua Yang’s photobook series, titled Women in Singapore Holding Up The Sky, captures the strength and spirit of Singaporean women of all walks
In a world that has long celebrated the notion of strength and courage as masculine, the rise of a gentler–but no less formidable–power is undeniably breaking the bias: a feminine resilience that possesses the power to hold up the sky. Women Inspiring Women – The National Edition by Dr. Chua Yang asserts this very narrative, all while maintaining a degree of poise and determination.
The photobook series can only be described as a celebration of women, not as warriors, but as a quiet yet unwavering force that sustains communities. A medical professional herself who is an ardent advocate of projecting these inspiring stories to the masses, Dr. Chua aims for her photo book series to be the platform that spreads this vision of empowerment and resilience.
Beyond a superficial photographic display, Women in Singapore Holding Up The Sky manifests as a visual testimony to the multifaceted lives and roles of Singaporean women from all walks of life. It casts a spotlight on insightful, inspiring, and sometimes poignant stories of our trailblazers and everyday heroes alike, inviting readers on a journey to witness their courage, vulnerabilities, and the tenacity that burns within. Balancing art with advocacy, it comprises personal anecdotes, vibrant portraits, and the stirring message that behind each successful community, there exists countless women quietly, or sometimes loudly, holding everything together.
Central to this creation is the impact as much as it is about recognition–all proceeds from the sale of the photo book are funnelled to initiatives that directly benefit the women in need within our communities. Following the success of the first release of this series, over S$160,000 was raised for local medical students in need of financial aid and other charities. This remarkable milestone enabled Dr. Chua to expand on her mission for continuous contributions for wider communities–the second release, within the short span of two months since it launched, has garnered some S$130,000 to support the Singapore Council of Women’s Organisation (SCWO), Daughters of Tomorrow, Babes, and Aidha, to name a few.
Over the span of a month starting from 28 November, a second print and multi-venue exhibition will breathe life into the book’s pages as Dr. Chua invites the public to experience these portraits firsthand in various spaces across Singapore. Join Dr. Chua on her mission to spark conversations about women’s empowerment and community contributions at these exhibitions; venues include the Photography Society of Singapore, Objectifs, The Foundry, SCWO, and TEDxSingapore.
