Grand Hyatt Singapore reopens with its nature-inspired terrace wing that will appeal to the sophisticated (and weary) traveller
What’s the story?
Grand Hyatt Singapore welcomes its ardent (and newly minted) fans back after a two-year renovation—delivering a refreshed and contemporary stay that oozes effortless sophistication.
We don’t use the term ‘effortless’ loosely here either. As soon as you enter the hotel, you’ll find a classic-chic and unpretentious space, decked with rich, dark wood and glossy marble. The structural elements of the lobby may not have changed much from before, but the small and thoughtful rearrangements of the space (like the now open and breezy check-in area situated in the middle of the lobby) lends it an easy elegance.
What’s the crowd like?
Busy. Just as it’d been before, the foot traffic (owing to the hotel’s superb location) is a little higher than most. That said, it never gets overwhelming enough to be of any concern. You’ll find a good mix of individuals here, from happy families and staycationers, to discerning business travellers.
Which room to go for?
There are currently 292 rooms (located at the Terrace Wing), spanning everything from the standard, 42sq m King rooms to the three opulent 252sq m presidential suites. Every room is tastefully designed, sporting a neutral colour palette and a lavish blend of wooden furnishings and marble. The King rooms and suites come with window alcoves, complete with daybeds too, appealing to those who love to lounge with a view.
For the weary traveller seeking an intimate respite, however, we found the Garden Studio to be the room for choice. Located on the first floor, and just mere steps away from the hotel’s garden, wellness pool and bar, the five exclusive Garden Studios offer the perfect sanctuary for rejuvenation. The expansive, 60sq m studio-styled rooms come with walk-in closets, spacious multi-purpose tables and lounge areas, and premium amenities like Toto toilets and Balmain bath provisions.
There’s a sense of intimate privacy and opulence here that will appeal to those seeking a leisurely wind-down. And with the rooms being so close to the hotel’s pools, cabanas, and bar, it’s almost as if the studios were exclusively designed for the closeted introvert: close to the action, yet hidden in a carapace of serene opulence.
Please tell us the service is good.
You don’t become an iconic hotel without stellar service. And to that point, Grand Hyatt Singapore (unsurprisingly) doesn’t disappoint. Just like the hotel’s design, there’s nothing pretentious or ostentatious about the service here.
Whether you’d like a specific pillow delivered to your room for an afternoon snooze, or a run-down of the best things to do in the area: ask and you will receive. It’s simple and efficient service—attentive, without feeling obtrusive.
Should I dine here?
Definitely. While Le Pristine by European chef, Sergio Herman, is yet to open, there’s enough here to satiate the discerning epicurean. For a taste of local cuisine, the StraitsKitchen offers a buffet of authentic, local dishes bursting with hearty flavours.
For dinner, however, you must head down to the hotel’s Italian restaurant, Pete’s Place, which has been open since 1973. There, you’ll find an array of authentic and fresh Italian food that will impress even the most astute critics.
We especially recommend the restaurant’s four-cheese pizza—the Formaggiosa. The slight saltiness from the cheeses deftly cuts the sweetness from the drops of honey on the pizza, making for a sumptuous dish that packs a punch, without overpowering the palate.
When should I visit?
There’s plenty more to come from Grand Hyatt Singapore, with the hotel’s grand wing (meaning there’ll be many more rooms and suites) slated to open in the second quarter of 2025.
If you can’t wait till then (and we advise you not to either), any time from mid-October 2024 onwards would be perfect, with the hotel’s wellness facilities and restaurants expected to be up and running then.
