With rainforest views, wildlife encounters and nature-inspired design, Mandai Rainforest Resort by Banyan Tree makes a compelling case for rediscovering Singapore’s wild side
What’s the story?
Despite Singapore’s moniker as a Garden City (or is it a City in a Garden now?), nature isn’t really the first thing that comes to mind when one mentions our humble city-state. Instead, high-rises, glass-clad skyscrapers, and the constant hum of busy roads and even busier pathways are far more familiar images.
The 4.6-hectare Mandai Rainforest Resort by Banyan Tree, with its nature-inspired architecture, mature trees, and rainforest setting, appears to be the salve to this concrete fatigue. It’s also something of a homecoming for Banyan Tree. Despite being one of Singapore’s most recognisable hospitality brands, Mandai Rainforest Resort is the group’s first property on home soil.

Nestled within the Mandai Wildlife Reserve and overlooking the Upper Seletar Reservoir, the resort allows guests the chance to trade traffic for birdsong and towering skylines for rainforest views. As you approach the property, you’ll find yourself gradually immersed in nature. With its winding shape that follows the contours of the natural terrain, as well as lush greens and creeping vines cascading from the exterior walls, it almost feels as though the property has been subsumed by its surroundings.
What’s the crowd like?
Surprisingly diverse. During our stay, we spotted honeymooners, families, and staycationers looking for a brief yet immersive escape. Families with small children do seem to make up the majority, however. Well, with attractions such as Bird Paradise, Singapore Zoo and Night Safari just a stone’s throw away, is it really any surprise?
That said, a sense of calm still permeates the property, helped in no small part by the surrounding greenery and the generous spacing between its various facilities. Whether you’re seeking some quiet time with a cup of coffee or meandering through the grounds in hopes of spotting some of the nearby wildlife, you’ll be able to do so without feeling overwhelmed by the presence of other guests.
What can I do there?
The easy answer would be to explore the attractions within the Mandai Wildlife Reserve—and you absolutely should. With Bird Paradise, Singapore Zoo, Night Safari, River Wonders, Rainforest Wild Adventure and Curiosity Cove all within easy reach, guests could easily spend an entire stay hopping between wildlife encounters, nature-themed experiences and family-friendly attractions.

But to spend your entire time rushing from one attraction to the next would be doing the resort a disservice. There’s plenty to enjoy on property; take a dip in the rooftop pool overlooking the Upper Seletar Reservoir, enjoy a rejuvenating session at the spa, or simply stroll around the grounds, admiring the architecture while keeping an eye out for some of the wildlife that occasionally make an appearance.
If there’s one thing we suggest making time for, however, it’s a trip to the resort’s easternmost point at sunrise. Yes, an early start may sound like the exact opposite of a relaxing getaway, but the view is well worth the effort.
Which room to go for?
The resort’s 338 rooms, suites and treehouses are all well designed, drawing inspiration from the rainforest and its many layers. Expect warm timber finishes, earthy tones and nature-inspired details throughout. In keeping with the resort’s sustainability ethos, several furnishings have also been crafted using wood salvaged from trees cleared during the development of the site. Rooms are equipped with an interactive display that tracks energy consumption too, gently encouraging guests to be a little more mindful of their usage.

For those looking to make the most of their stay, however, the Treehouses are the rooms to book. One of just 24 on the property, these distinctive accommodations are inspired by the seed pods of the native Purple Millettia tree. Elevated above the forest floor and nestled amongst the greenery, they offer an immersive stay amidst the canopy, complete with private patios overlooking either the reservoir or surrounding rainforest. Guests staying in the Treehouses also enjoy access to an exclusive private pool pavilion.

This isn’t to say the resort’s guestrooms should be overlooked. The Sanctuary King, in particular, impresses with its reservoir views and calming interiors. But if there’s one room category that best captures the spirit of Mandai Rainforest Resort by Banyan Tree, it’s the Treehouse.
Please say the spa is good.
It wouldn’t be a Banyan Tree property without a good spa, would it? Thankfully, the Banyan Tree Spa more than delivers. Tucked away within the resort’s western wing, the spa feels removed from the rest of the property.

Whether you’re looking to soothe tired muscles after a day spent traversing the wildlife parks or simply seeking an excuse to do absolutely nothing for an hour, the spa offers the sort of respite that Banyan Tree has built its reputation on. The treatments are rooted in traditional Asian wellness practices, while the earthy interiors and calming atmosphere do much of the relaxation before the therapist has even begun.
Should I dine here?
Yes. While the wildlife parks and attractions may be the headline act, Forage, the resort’s signature restaurant, makes a compelling case for staying put. Helmed by Chef de Cuisine Marcus Tan, whose résumé includes some of Singapore’s most acclaimed fine dining establishments, the restaurant champions a harvest-to-table philosophy, drawing ingredients from its rooftop edible garden and local producers to create a menu that evolves with the seasons.

During our visit, the standout dish was a deconstructed asam pedas. Thoughtfully reimagined without losing sight of its roots, the dish managed to feel both elevated and comforting at the same time. Of course, the food is only part of the appeal. Floor-to-ceiling windows frame sweeping views of the Upper Seletar Reservoir, while the restaurant’s warm interiors create a setting that feels in keeping with the rest of the resort.
Why not just get on a plane?
It’s a little reminder that beyond the skyscrapers, shopping malls and busy roads, Singapore still has plenty of charms of its own. With its wildlife encounters, rainforest surroundings and reservoir views, Mandai Rainforest Resort by Banyan Tree reveals a side of the city-state that many of us rarely stop to appreciate. It’s a bit like seeing a lover without makeup for the first time: a little different, perhaps, but beautiful just the same.
