Spectators at LIV Golf Singapore 2024 enjoyed a well above par sporting experience
Given the success of LIV Golf’s debut in Singapore last year, it was hardly a surprise when the competition made a return this year. Supported by Sentosa Development Corporation and Singapore Tourism Board, the tournament (which was the seventh stop of the 2024 LIV Golf league) was once again held at Sentosa Golf Club, and ran from 3 to 5 May 2024.
Established in 2022, LIV Golf is a professional men’s golf league that features a 54-hole format, as opposed to the traditional 72. Despite its infancy, LIV Golf has quickly become synonymous with top-flight and viewing-friendly golf, thanks to its star-studded roster and creative approach to the sport.
Diverging from traditional methods, the league uses a “shotgun start” format, in which all players start simultaneously from different holes—reducing the time taken to complete each round. The league also explores the sport’s potential as a team-centric game. It organises players into teams, and calculates both individual and team scores simultaneously. This means that every player has the chance to earn glory by having the best score across the entire field or by contributing significantly to their team’s score.
In addition to the top-flight golf on display, this year’s LIV Golf Singapore saw the league stay true to its slogan, “Golf, but louder”, with a host of world-class amenities and entertainment offerings. When not glued to the action on the turf, guests enjoyed the buzzing atmosphere of the Fan Village and partook in interactive experiences.
Those who had purchased LIV Golf’s comprehensive premium passes also received special privileges, ranging from complimentary cocktails to exclusive access to private clubs.
The best show, of course, was on the green. Played on The Serapong, Sentosa Golf Club’s immaculate 6,765-metre course, the tournament began competitively. Colombian golfer Sebastián Muñoz shot a six-under 65 in round one to earn him a one-shot advantage over his closest competitors.
In round two, however, the in-form, 34-year-old Brooks Koepka flexed his pedigree. He stormed to a three-shot lead before converting his advantage in round three to become the first golfer to win four individual LIV Golf events.
“Yeah, it’s all starting to come around. I’ve put in a lot of work…so to see it pay off here is huge,” said Koepka.
In the team section, the all-Australian Ripper GC secured a second consecutive win in the tournament after a hotly contested finish.
“I think we just keep pushing each other,” said Ripper GC captain Cameron Smith. “We’ve got a really good mix of personalities, and we just gel so well.”
