Visitors to New York can now seek theatrical productions beyond Broadway. Just an hour’s drive from Manhattan is the Hudson Valley Shakespeare‘s Samuel H Scripps Theatre Centre, the company’s first-ever permanent home and art space named after a philanthropist and lifelong lover of the arts.

Opened to the public on 17 May 2026 with the season officially beginning 10 June 2026, the dedicated indoor-outdoor centre will immerse its guests in more than just great theatre, but the surrounding rolling green hills and lush meadows. The work of landscape architect Nelson Byrd Woltz and Studio Gang, the six-year-long project ensures that every nook and cranny is integral to the theatre’s functionality, while prioritising climate-smart design.

Once the season begins—there will be performances of Shakespeare’s As You Like ItKing Lear and even a new production of Boublil and Schӧnberg’s Les Misérables—guests will find themselves mostly at the 632-sqm centre’s 451-seat theatre, tucked under an arched, timer-framed grid shell. But there’s plenty to explore on 40 hectares of land, teeming with new biodiverse plantings and accessible pathways for guests to take in the sights.

There will also be retail and support spaces, an events venue kitted out for retreats and weddings, picnic lawns and a restaurant with stunning Hudson River views; Folio is a farm-to-table spot open during the summer, offering pizza nights on Sundays and picnics to go.
