The 12-carriage La Dolce Vita will take you to the Palio, the world’s oldest horse race, in style this summer

What better way to head to the world’s oldest horse race than in Italy’s first luxury train?

La Dolce Vita Orient Express is offering two new trips to Siena, Italy, to see the Palio. Taking place this summer, the three-day adventures give travellers a chance to soak in the Italian countryside before experiencing the centuries-old equestrian competition.

Dating back to the 13th century, the Palio is steeped in tradition. Taking place twice a year in the historic medieval city of Siena, the bareback horse race sees 10 of the 17 distinct neighbourhoods (or contrade) compete. The horses and jockeys make three laps around a square known as the Piazza del Campo, with each race typically lasting less than 90 seconds. The thrilling event is the centrepiece of the new itinerary, but it is not the only incredible experience you can expect.

The journey begins at Rome Ostiense station in the plush La Dolce Vita Lounge, where you can enjoy a tipple before boarding the train. At dusk, the train will depart the Eternal City for Tuscany. While winding through the scenic hills, you will be served a dinner by three-Michelin-starred chef Heinz Beck. The evening continues in the Bar Car, with cocktails and live piano music.

The next day, you’ll take a private transfer to the Palazzo Chigi Zondadari in Siena. The 18th-century Baroque palace overlooks the Piazza del Campo, making it the perfect place to watch the race. You’ll enjoy an aperitivo before heading to the private balconies to see all the antics play out on the square. After that, a Tuscan dinner will be served up in the palace courtyard. The afterparty continues back in the train’s Bar Car. The following morning, the train will take you back to Rome.

You will live the good life across the three days, too. Labeled “Italy’s first luxury train,” La Dolce Vita pairs old-world Italian glamour with the finest modern amenities. The 12 carriages host no more than 62 passengers at a time, creating a truly intimate travel experience. Accommodation includes 12 deluxe cabins, 18 suites, and one suitably flashy La Dolce Vita Suite.

This journey will be offered twice during the summer, from 1 to 3 July and 15 to 17 August 2026. The Palio in July is held in honour of the Madonna di Provenzano, while the race in August is a tribute to the Assumption of Mary.

Reservations can be made via Orient Express.
