Across three bars in Singapore, there are four cocktails hoping to turn some heads and stir up conversation. They are in the running for winning the grand finale at Pistola Duels II, a competition featuring bartenders from Singapore, India and Thailand. Whoever creates the most innovative cocktail will win (among other challenges), with Maya Pistola Agavepura at the forefront.
Maya Pistola Agavepura, also known as Asia’s first premium aged 100% agave spirit, is made from wild agave americana that thrives in India’s Deccan plateau, where rich and arid volcanic soil creates the perfect breeding ground. Authenticity is a key ingredient here, with each expression spotlighting the terroir and region’s unique flavours, and bottled without artificial additives or colouring agents. The Joven, which is great in cocktails, is a complex blend of aged and unaged spirits, with notes of citrus, mint and green peppercorn. The Añejo, delicious on its own, features a smooth spirit aged over 14 months in virgin American white oak, offering notes of cocoa, dried fig and roasted almond.
Until 26 September 2024, Maya Pistola Agavepura’s award-winning spirits will star in creations by finalists from Smoke & Mirrors, Potato Head and Anti:Dote. Free as a Bird, a concoction by Anti:Dote’s lead bartender Marlon Aseoche, complements the Añejo with coffee liqueur, coconut syrup, clarified Greek yoghurt and salt. Forget Me Not, on the other hand, is quite unforgettable. The work of Smoke & Mirrors’ assistant head bartender Wee Siong, it tastes a lot better than it sounds, for something that makes use of bitter gourd-kiwi liqueur, umeshu, lime juice, olive brine and menthe pastille to accompany the Reposado, a five-month aged spirit with notes of vanilla, oak and butterscotch.
