The Rolex Perpetual Padellone imbues the annual calendar with modern distinction

By Alvin Wong 25 September, 2026

Taking inspiration from a vintage model of the 1940s, the Perpetual Padellone ups the ante with its technically impressive new movement and regal disposition

Collectors have long held an affection for Rolex reference 8171, an elegant dress watch complemented by a full calendar with a moonphase. Made between the late 1940s and the early 1950s, the watch, nicknamed ‘Padellone’, combined stately sophistication with quiet practicality.

This year, Rolex channels the style and functionality of the vintage model for the new Perpetual Padellone in one of the most surprising launches of 2026. Exuding authority and class in a manner that the best dress watches do, the Perpetual Padellone transposes the design vocabulary and technical merits of its predecessor into something altogether contemporary, yet never loses sight of its lineage and personality.

Unveiled in mid-September, the watch counts an annual calendar complication as its technical highlight. As expected of an annual calendar, the Padellone distinguishes 30-day months from 31-day ones and needs correcting only once a year, at the end of February.

Rolex, however, offers its own take on the feature. The Perpetual Padellone uses a calendar system called Haplos, which replaces the traditional system of complex gears that help compute the differences in date.

Haplos does so by adding only two components, a supplementary carrier finger and an annual lever, to the date mechanism. This not only simplifies the system but, in doing so, leaves less room for error.

Then there is the changeover. Plenty of calendar displays move forward slowly, over an hour or two, before the change occurs at midnight. Here, the date, day, and month jump instantaneously on the stroke of 12, a feature for which Rolex has filed a separate patent application.

The automatic calibre 7190, which runs at a high frequency of 5Hz and uses a state-of-the-art regulating system comprising a silicon Dynapulse escapement and an oscillator with a ceramic balance staff, provides the foundation for the calendar complication.

That said, all that technical complexity is in service of the Perpetual Padellone’s effortless elegance. The day and month windows that line up at the top, the date ring that discreetly frames the dial, and the moonphase display showing both the full and new moon, crafted in meteorite and sitting on an enamel disc, offer a neat and crisp read-off. Everything is carefully calibrated, and no indicator, appliqué, or hand looks out of place.

Here’s the other thing. Don’t expect the Perpetual Padellone to dish out throwback tropes. While the watch pays homage to the reference 8171, it is a timepiece made for the modern aficionado who appreciates luxury that is studied and restrained.

From the discreet pairing of smooth and fluted decoration on the two-part bezel, to the combination of applied Arabic and baton hour markers on a grain-finished dial, the Perpetual Padellone is an expression of classical watchmaking reinterpreted for the 21st century.

Available in 39mm Everose gold and platinum cases, the watch is offered in three variations: white dial with seven-link Settimo bracelet or brown alligator strap for the gold models, and ice-blue dial with a black alligator strap for the platinum version. The biggest complication, it appears now, extends beyond the watches to the conundrum of choice.
