Royal Salute: born of excellence

By Special Feature 3 June, 2026

Just as it is with fine watches, Royal Salute crafts the world’s most exquisite whiskies through a mastery of time-honoured techniques, sublime creativity, and quiet patience

The sage advice that all good things come to those who wait is well-heeded by connoisseurs of every stripe. Collectors of fine timepieces and great Scotch whiskies, in particular, understand instinctively that true beauty and craft cannot be hurried. Whether waiting years for a commissioned minute repeater to be delivered, or savouring an exceptionally aged expression, aficionados of the finest things in life recognise the virtues of creations rooted in tradition and shaped by meticulous craft, handed down through generations of dedicated artisans.

It is a philosophy that beats at the heart of Royal Salute. Born in 1953 to honour the coronation of Queen Elizabeth II—and the ceremonial 21-gun salute fired in her honour—the Scotch whisky house has, from its first expression, committed to producing whiskies aged a minimum of 21 years. Time is not merely a prerequisite at Royal Salute. It is the medium through which the house achieves excellence.

The Art of Waiting

The Royal Salute 21 Year Old Signature Blend is, in many ways, the very notion of a standard-bearer. Like an expert watchmaker assembling a complex mechanical movement, master blender emeritus Sandy Hyslop and his team surveyed hundreds of casks, each assessed for its contribution to the final accord. Rare Scotch whiskies, including the Strathisla single malt, are drawn together and matured for a minimum of 21 years. The result is a whisky of immense depth with notes of sweet pears, vanilla, dry oak, and orange marmalade on the palate.

Presented in Royal Salute’s iconic blue flagon, its glaze evokes the gemstones of the Crown Jewels. Each vessel is hand-sculpted in Cornish clay, air-dried, and finished with a double layer of glaze. Just as a watchmaking house lavishes equal attention on a timepiece’s decorative virtues, Royal Salute shows that the vessel is an outward expression of the excellence that is within.

The 24 Year Old Cognac Cask Finish, on the other hand, echoes the ambition of the house. Royal Salute’s first expression finished in a cognac cask, it was born from Hyslop’s pursuit of something unprecedented: a whisky that married the grandeur of Scottish single malts—which were sourced from the distinguished distilleries of Strathisla and Longmorn—with the richness imparted by the rarest first-fill French oak cognac casks.

Twenty-four years of patient maturation have yielded a liquid of extraordinary depth. The copper-gold whisky opens with dark cherries and toasted oak, gradually introducing hints of marzipan, caramelised figs, and summer berry compote, before closing with a long, spiced finish. It is, in every sense, a whisky built for those who appreciate patience and restraint.

Created exclusively for Asian markets, the expression is presented in a striking red limited-edition flagon that symbolises auspiciousness and celebration. The packaging tells the story of Royal Salute’s journey in captivating the Asian aficionado, replete with illustrations of the emblematic Tower of London alongside an Asian garden pagoda, and pheasants and cranes that symbolise good fortune. In both the precious liquid and its design, the 24 Year Old Cognac Cask Finish is an expression that speaks to the sophistication of the Asian connoisseur. For those who measure value not in fleeting moments but in years, Royal Salute stands as enduring proof that time remains the greatest ally of all.
