Serena Williams is a master at serving—both tennis balls and looks. The GOAT has won 23 Grand Slam singles titles in her own distinctly powerful way, dominating the courts while simultaneously making bold fashion statements. Audemars Piguet watches have been on her wrist since 2014, when she became an ambassador for the Swiss maison. She started out wearing a rose-gold Millenary but has since strapped on various Royal Oaks and the Code 11.59. Her latest AP is one she herself helped design.
Audemars Piguet and Williams teamed up to create a new Royal Oak Chronograph. Taking design cues from the original Royal Oak chrono launched in 1997, the limited edition features AP signature octagonal bezel, hexagonal screws, and tri-compax subdial arrangement, but has been given the Williams treatment.
“Working with Audemars Piguet on this watch has been special because it reflects so many parts of who I am,” the tennis star said in a statement.
The 38 mm case, bezel, crown, and integrated bracelet are all crafted in sturdy white ceramic, with every surface meticulously hand-finished in alternating satin brushing and chamfering for added pizzazz. That exceptionally solid architecture is juxtaposed with a soft, pink mother-of-pearl dial. The dichotomy of hard and soft is something that Williams appreciates.
“I’ve always believed that strength and feminine energy can exist side by side,” she explains. “The white ceramic feels strong and resilient, while the pink mother-of-pearl dial brings warmth and softness.”
On the dial lie luminescent white-gold hands and matching applied hour markers, three subdials surrounded by rhodium-toned threads, and a pink date window with contrasting white numerals. That colorway continues on the additional strap, with the pink rubber adorned with white ceramic studs and a titanium AP folding clasp.
The beating heart is the Calibre 6401 that AP launched earlier this year to replace the famous Calibre 2385. Developed entirely in-house, the movement runs a patented vertical-clutch system that ensures smoother activation and enhanced reliability, according to AP. It also offers a power reserve of 55 hours. To top it off, the chrono showcases a range of haute horlogerie decorations, such as Côtes de Genève, circular graining, polishing, and satin brushing. All that can be appreciated through the sapphire caseback—the titanium frame of which is engraved with “limited edition.”
“Every detail was intentional,” Williams adds. “To me, this watch is a reminder that you don’t have to choose between power and grace—you can embrace both.”
