International Pairs gives local amateur golfers the chance to test themselves on a global stage

Whether you’re a fan of tennis, volleyball, or golf, there is almost nothing more alluring than the prospect of vying against other players of your chosen sport in a prestigious, international tournament. That opportunity may just be a distant dream for many, but local amateur golfers can look towards the national qualifiers for the International Pairs tournament as the perfect platform to test their skills and uncover exactly how they measure up.

Set to tee off at Laguna National Golf Resort Club’s Classic Course on 12 September, the two-player team format qualifiers comes to Singapore for the first time in its history, and offers amateur golfers the chance to compete for a coveted spot in the world final held in Tenerife. All one needs to participate is a registered address in Singapore and an internationally recognised handicap issued by their golf club.

“These are exciting times for local amateur golfers,” says Benny Teo, managing director of Blazon, the sports marketing agency which secured the license for the Singapore edition of International Pairs. “It will be the first time in the history of the International Pairs tournament that there will be a representation from Singapore.”

Should they qualify, teams will compete against players from over 27 other countries in a Better Ball Stableford format across three championship divisions—open, women’s, and mixed. The format, which only counts the best score after both players on the team play their own ball, allows room for players to showcase their individual skills while still maintaining a team-centric mindset.

Those who aren’t competing in the main event, can instead partake in the Ryder Experience. The experience will draw them into four teams, each led by a former Ryder Cup player, before players compete against one another. With European Ryder Cup legends like Manuel Pinero, Constantino Rocca, Ronan Rafferty, and Eddie Polland set to captain the respective teams, there’ll be plenty of opportunities for local golfers to go head to head with the very best.

“We are incredibly excited to welcome Singapore to the International Pairs family,” says Gerhard Conradie, executive board member of International Pairs Golf. “ We look forward to seeing the talent and passion they bring to the competition.”
