Editor’s Letter: The Adrenaline issue, May 2023

By Alvin Wong 11 May, 2023

In the Adrenaline issue, Robb Report Singapore takes you on adventures off the beaten track

Don’t believe for a second, especially the reticent homebodies among us, that thrill-seeking is only for the bold and fearless. We are all adrenaline junkies in some capacity; it is just that we choose our own adventures.

So, from within these pages, we invite you to select yours. There are some, as our lovingly curated list, Well Thrilled, demonstrates, that gently tug at the limits of your comfort zone and send your pulse racing. Fancy yourself a couch potato? We show you how to get cosy in a living room that hangs over a cliff. Itching for a vacation or gastronomic journey? There are travel agencies and restaurants that promise to take you way off the beaten track—think far-out Siberia and game-hunting-and-cooking workshops in rural Sussex. Even if your appetite for adventure leans to the conventional, we’ve got you covered. Our recommendations include Formula 1 driving experiences, space flights, and passenger flights in fighter jets.

So, as we welcome you to an issue dedicated to the pleasures of intense excitement, we ask you to also cast aside all preconceived notions to how this can be achieved. Not all thrills necessarily involve danger, scares, or potentially messing up your hair. “I found my thrill on Blueberry Hill,” sang Fats Domino in 1956. I reckon we can all take a leaf from Fats by learning to recognise what thrills us. After all, what better way to discover new and unexpected facets of ourselves? Or reconnect with the emotions of our youth?

For me, the last time I felt a proper rush, I was on stage with my friends. We were playing the songs we wrote as teenagers. The crowd (yes, there was one) sang the words back at us. The rush was heightened by the fact that most in the audience couldn’t have been born when the songs were written. The whoosh of adrenaline was familiar. Yet, it also felt just like the first time. Maybe that’s why they say it is an addiction. It didn’t matter if we were 16 or 46, the excitement never gets old.
