The latest release by The Glenrothes is smashing delicious, if you can get past its exterior

By Robb Report Singapore 2 April, 2025

The 51 by The Glenrothes is the world’s first whisky that will take you from ruins to glory, if you’d let a hammer do the work

There is strength in vulnerability—a fine reminder that comes to mind with the latest release by The Glenrothes. Founded in 1879 with the vision of creating the world’s most elegant whisky, the distillery prides itself on using exceptionally soft water, sourced from its own private spring. Such purity creates a uniquely delicate spirit, which intensifies over time.

The 51 is a celebration of this phenomenon. As the distillery’s oldest and most daring endeavour to date, it is the product of just two casks—one delivering deeply perfumed notes that evoke the fragility of the wild orchids on The Glenrothes’ Speyside estate, another yielding a a lush richness and depth—presenting a complexity and topical vibrancy rarely found in whiskies this mature.

To further its point, that age begets strength, one must apply a little elbow grease to access the whisky. With the hammer provided, smash your way through the solid Jesmonite column the bottle (and a surprise orchid) is encased in. Once that’s accomplished, you are welcome to return all fragments to The Glenrothes, where a Kintsugi artist will restore them with precious metal, transforming them into a one-of-a-kind vase for your orchid to grow in.

“The 51 is a testament to those rare moments in whisky making when patience, nature, and craft align perfectly. This whisky defies expectations—elegant yet powerful, it offers a singular experience for those who truly understand and appreciate rarity,” said Laura Rampling, the master whisky maker. “Each sip unveils new layers, from soft floral notes to deep complexity, much like the orchids that bloom year after year on our estate.”
