Why stay at The Hari, a boutique hotel located in the heart of Wan Chai in Hong Kong

As one of Hong Kong’s top openings in 2021, The Hari is a stylish retreat for the discerning traveller

The location

Most people are convinced that Hong Kong is no longer the same, not since China tightened its grip on the Pearl of the Orient. While change is inevitable, it’s a city still worth visiting. For a glimpse of old-world Hong Kong, stay in Wan Chai, an energetic neighbourhood that’s home to street markets, Colonial-era architecture and plenty of nightlife.

On Lockhart Street in Wan Chai, within easy access to a “ding-ding tram” and Happy Valley Racecourse, The Hari is a stylish retreat for the discerning traveller. As one of Hong Kong’s top openings in 2021, the boutique hotel happens to be one of British designer Tara Bernerd‘s first projects, conjuring a luxe New York-loft vibe with its brick-and-marble mid-century looks. The Pontone Gallery from London was also brought in to curate a collection of contemporary art, from digital film pieces to surrealist photography.

The rooms

Pick any of the 210 rooms that stretch from the fourth to 30th floor, and enjoy a real sense of being tucked away. Cleverly designed with big windows and natural tones, each room is bright and airy, and equipped with luxuries like an Arabescato marble bathroom, plush bedding and panoramic views.

For space, go for one of the three suites that range from 77 to 80 square metres. Each penthouse suite is equipped with a private terrace, where one may enjoy a nightcap as they soak in the views of Central, Victoria Harbour and The Peak.

The food and drink

You’re better off exploring the city and indulging in roast goose (the nearby Tin Lung makes a mean bird), but if you’re craving for Japanese or Italian, you’re in luck. Hit up Zoku for nigiri, kushiyaki or its free-flow weekend brunch menu. Led by former Nobu chef Phillip Pak, you’d see where the restaurant gets its contemporary flair from.

Similarly, Lucciola Restaurant and Bar, offers traditional Italian dishes with a modern twist. Highlights include ricotta and black truffle ravioli, aged carnaroli risotto and Chilean sea bass, served with a black mussel and clam broth. Wash it down with one of its many wines available, and proceed to The Lounge afterwards for a few cocktails.
