The Macallan Red Collection welcomes a new 73-year-old single malt expression

By Hannah Choo 17 July, 2024

The Macallan 73 Years Old is a rare single malt that dates back to 1950, making it one of the oldest whiskies in the brand’s history

While the rest of us would love to stay young, the same can’t be said for a delicious single malt. For those who dream of the old but gold, The Macallan’s Red Collection is one way to go. The extraordinary series combines the oldest-ever ongoing bottlings, including 40-, 50-, and even 78-year-old single malts.

Adding to The Red Collection is a new high-aged guest expression, The Macallan 73 Years Old. This rare single malt dates back to 1950, making it one of the oldest Scotch whiskies in The Macallan’s history. Hand-finished with the year of bottling, bottle number and strength written on the label, it comes with the signature of Euan Kennedy, the lead whisky maker at the distillery.

Distilled in the brand’s signature small copper stills, which are among the the smallest in Speyside, and aged in exceptional oak casks, the 73 Years Old is lifts the spirit with notes of apricot jam, liquorice and treacle. Soft-baked apple and nutmeg add to the mix, alongside dates, sweet woodsmoke and toffee. Neatly presented in an oak box lined with buttery soft, red Scottish leather (red comes from the surname of founder Alexander Reid, which means ‘the red one’), the bottle is laid to rest on an oak plinth fashioned from repurposed cask end pieces.

The Macallan 73 Years Old is available in limited quantities at The Macallan House Singapore. Price upon request.
