The Macallan has launched two limited-edition single malt whiskies, created in honour of the circularity of nature and Charles Rennie Mackintosh’s enduring legacy
Nature inspires The Macallan in every step, be it driving positive change with responsible packaging or nurturing its estate with a rich and varied ecosystem of over 60,000 trees and more than 70 species of wildlife, birds and fish.
Sharing the same love for nature is the late Charles Rennie Mackintosh, a Scottish architect and artist whose work was influential on European design movements like Art Nouveau and Secessionism. Mackintosh saw art as the ‘flower’ of life and through nature’s forms and symbols, sought to create buildings that harmonised with their surroundings.
To pay homage to his enduring legacy, The Macallan has launched The Tree of Life Collection, featuring two limited-edition single malt whiskies created to honour the circularity of nature.
The Tree of Life, a 46-year-old whisky made from sherry-seasoned oak casks from 1979, boasts a complexity that reflects both maturity and a key moment in Mackintosh’s life; at 46, he moved to the countryside to take a break from work and reconnect with nature, only to produce some of his finest art. Made for anyone who favour a smoky palate laced with tropical fruit and dark chocolate-covered raisins, the whisky rests in 112 beautiful Lalique crystal decanters, each finished with a rose stopper.
Complementing this rare release is Art is the Flower, an expression named after Mackintosh’s 1902 lecture that showcased the parallels between art, nature and the soul. Also inspired by his iconic 1902 stained-glass panel, The Spirit of the Rose, the whisky presents a deep-coloured expression with naturally developed flavours derived from sherry-seasoned European oak casks. Rich dried fruit envelope the nose before notes of vanilla and ginger land on the palate.
The Tree of Life Collection builds on The Macallan’s rich history of creative collaborations, and is further complemented by a series of short documentary-style films. Featuring artists, architects and historians, the series explores the work of Mackintosh and how he continues to influence artisans and global projects of today.
