Motoring-inspired watches you can flaunt at the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix
You know the drill. It’s that time of the year where you pack your earplugs, slap on the F1 team jersey of your persuasion, and make your way down to the Formula 1 Singapore Grand Prix. Besides the three-night race, there are exclusive meet-and-greets and VIP parties, of course. Here are four high-octane, motoring-inspired watches to keep you on top of the programme.
Chopard Millie Miglia Classic Chronograph
Chopard’s Millie Miglia watches pay homage to the vintage car rally of the same name in both spirit and form; peppered with design nods to the race (check out the red arrow logo), while at the same time driven by the luxury marque’s most powerful chronograph movements. Encased in Chopard’s proprietary sustainable Lucent steel with a black-and-white ‘La Gara’ dial (‘race’ in Italian), this year’s edition oozes throwback flair. The retro sensibility is strong with its 1970s-style ‘panda’ dial, knurled crown, and pump pushers on the case. Underneath the hood, though, is a thoroughly modern workhorse—a COSC-certified automatic chronograph movement with 54-hour power reserve.
H. Moser & Cie. Streamliner Cylindrical Tourbillon Skeleton Alpine Limited Edition
By H. Moser’s higher-ups’ admission, the brand has “gone big” with the partnership with the Alpine Motorsports F1 Team. To commemorate the tie-up, the independent watch brand has decided to level up with a technically bold timepiece that demonstrates cutting-edge innovation and performance. Spiked with the F1 electric blue team colours, the star of the show is its stunning skeletonised movement bearing an off-centred blue sapphire time display and a one-minute flying tourbillon fitted with a cylindrical hairspring at 6 o’clock. Limited to 100 pieces, this is a collectible that will set the hearts of technical watch buffs racing.
IWC Schaffhausen Big Pilot’s Watch AMG G 63
When Mercedes-Benz unveiled the 1,000-unit Mercedes-AMG G63 ‘Grand Edition’ in March, the carmaker enlisted its close collaborator, IWC Schaffhausen, to create a companion timepiece for the new off-roader. The watchmaker obliged with a special edition Big Pilot’s Watch AMG G 63, which mirrors the vehicle’s robustness and regality. Echoing the colours of the Grand Edition, the watch is lavished in black and gold. IWC crafts the case in ‘Armor Gold’, a proprietary alloy that is said to be more robust than regular 18k gold, while the black dial boasts a relief textured pattern that recalls the grilles and air intake of Mercedes-AMG performance cars. The see-through case back showcases IWC’s workhorse engine, the Calibre 52010 in-house automatic chronograph movement with seven-day power reserve. To ensure that the collaboration doesn’t go unnoticed, the winding rotor also features the Mercedes-Benz logo.
TAG Heuer Carrera Extreme Sport Tourbillon Chronograph
Big, bold, and technically dynamic, this watch lives up to its ‘Extreme’ sobriquet. An unabashedly loud dual-complication, the Carrera Extreme Sport Tourbillon Chronograph features a high-precision chronograph and a 60-second tourbillon, presented on an openworked dial that grants you a peek at its complex mechanisms. But it is not just about showy machismo. The watch’s technical sophistication is backed by enduring performance with 65-hour power reserve, and TAG Heuer’s extended five-year warranty. Available in titanium case with forged carbon bezel, or 18k rose gold with titanium pushers and case back.
