Where to stay in Nusa Dua: A luxury getaway to St. Regis Bali, a short flight from Singapore

The St. Regis Bali Resort enters a new decade in the Islands of the Gods with a US$5 million (S$6.87 million) refurbishment

Ten years is a blink of an eye for St. Regis — a grande dame with history dating back to 1904 — but a decade is considerably long in Bali, the Indonesian tourist hotspot where sparkling new resorts pop up quicker than the seasons change. Yet after all this time, The St. Regis Bali Resort remains as one of the island’s finest addresses since its opening in September 2008. How? Through consistency.

With a name that’s synonymous with timeless elegance, refined luxury and peerless service, the sprawling Nusa Dua resort set within a nine-hectare garden looks like it hasn’t aged a day. The suite-and-villa-only beachfront property is as stunning as ever: the lobby continues to greet guests with its glittery splendour, the infinite panoramic ocean views never get old and the 3,668-sqm crystal saltwater lagoon pool still sparkles. Even the staff on duty look fresh-faced and earnest to answer to all of your whims and fancies, no matter the time of day.

If that doesn’t inspire return visits, the newly refurbished villas and the new Strand Residence will. Reimagined to evoke a warmer, homey feel, the new look is that of restrained extravagance with a touch of Balinese rusticity, complete with the staples you’d expect from a St. Regis hotel: crystal chandeliers, palatial marble bathrooms, huge beds, and plush furnishings. The living rooms and bedrooms have also been upgraded with the latest 52-inch Smart TVs, complete with advanced entertainment systems. In-room temperature controls, blackout shades and luxurious bedding ensure you get the rest you rightfully deserve.

There are three types of villa experiences at The St. Regis Bali Resort. The Strand Villas offer direct access to the Indian Ocean, as well as spacious, split-level tropical gardens, indoor and outdoor living areas and traditional Balinese bale bengong-style gazebos for summertime lounging. For a more discreet hideaway, go for the one- or two-bedroom Lagoon Villas, located just steps away from the saltwater pool. Those who wish to be surrounded by greenery will find the private Gardenia Villas a great refuge.

Nestled on the edge of Nusa Dua’s clear waters on the property is the splendid three-bedroom, two-level Strand Residence that delivers the best of all worlds — utmost privacy, perfect manicured gardens leading directly to the sandy beach and a lavish, 966-sqm space big enough for relaxing and reconnecting with family and friends while enjoying the legendary St. Regis hospitality provided by experienced housekeepers, cooks and butlers. Interiors exude an airy grandeur, thanks to the two massive crystal chandeliers and Balinese artworks adorning the light-filled space, which is fitted with glass doors that open up to stunning views of the ocean. All three beautifully appointed king bedrooms are fitted with 52-inch TVs that have a state-of-the-art sound system and technology. Outside in the sprawling Balinese gardens, you’ll find a plunge pool, tropical rain shower, a gazebo and dedicated seating on the private beach.

It’s so easy to hole up in the resort and never explore the rest of the island. The St. Regis Bali Resort has its own dining enclave with three restaurants, two of which have won awards, and two bars, including the iconic King Cole Bar. Kayuputi Restaurant is where the famous Astor Diamond Champagne Sunday Brunch takes place; Boneka, another award-winning dining spot serves a sumptuous spread of international delights; Gourmand Deli brings artisan food, wines, coffees and teas from around the world while outstanding, moreish Indonesian plates awaits at Dulang.

Skipping the spa here is also a mistake. Remede Spa is a tranquil refuge that boasts an 11-page spa menu (true decadence comes in the form of the 150-minute Luxury Champagne Treatment), a wellness programme that includes mat-work pilates, yoga, core exercises, meditation and circuit training for each day of the week, as well as a steam room, a high-tech infrared sauna that targets different health concerns, and a sea salt, jet-massage pool.

As The St. Regis Bali Resort ushers in a new era, guests can expect more from the prestigious brand, including the transformation of all the suites at the resort in 2019, as well as the opening of The St. Regis Jakarta hotel and The Residences at The St. Regis Jakarta. Centrally located in Kuningan, the hotel will offer 280 exquisite guest rooms and suites, while The Residences promises contemporary luxury living in its Sky Residences, Sky Villas and Sky Palaces — with the signature butler service, no less.
