The path to Nigo’s current appointment as the artistic director of Kenzo has been paved by his wide-ranging and influential contributions to pop culture and how it intersects with the paradigm of luxury. His personal archives, being exemplary of his idiosyncratic taste and interests, are therefore a treasure trove of exclusive and deeply sought after items that are touchstones in the sweet spot of streetwear and luxury.

Earlier this month, Nigo, in collaboration with Pharrell Williams’ online auction house Joopiter, held a sale of his personal collection aptly titled From Me To You, after one of Nigo’s favourite songs by The Beatles. In an official statement, Williams, a longtime friend and associate of Nigo’s, revealed the following, “Nigo blew me away with his taste and curation. Everything he bought was an investment, something that clearly fit in a defined collection.”

From Me To You featured 60 for-sale lots that spanned jewellery, watches, clothing, collectibles, memorabilia and select never-before-seen pieces from his own vintage denim archives. At its close, Joopiter reported that all lots were sold, with 80 per cent of them commanding more than their estimated price.

A total of 685 bids from 15 countries were cast, leading to a gross sale of more than US$2 million, which was 359 per cent above the initially estimated profit. Much of the surge had to do with the winning bids of the three priciest lots: US$260,000 for the Jacob & Co. White Gold and Diamond Billionaire Boys Club Astronaut Pendant and Diamond Chain, US$220,000 for the Jacob & Co. White Gold and Diamond Running Dog Pendant and Diamond Gucci Link Chain and US$180,000 for Takashi Murakami-signed Louis Vuitton Multicolore Alzer suitcases.

Besides these, some other notable culturally significant picks included a pair of the ultra-rare BAPE STA College Drop Out Sneakers signed by Kanye West (US$80,000) and the Hermès Orange H Clemence Leather Birkin 55 with Palladium Hardware, purchased by Nigo in Hermès Tokyo in 2010 (US$22,000).
