As part of The Wavemaker Edit’s Island Alchemy series, this exclusive residency will feature immersive events and unforgettable creations

This August 2026, W Maldives will be more than just a luxury private-island resort that’s home to one of the region’s best house reefs. From the 18th to 21st, the W will also be home to the legendary Hiroyasu Kayama, a master bartender, farmer and owner of Bar Benfiddich, an intimate 15-seater hidden above the streets of Tokyo. The celebrated “farm-to-bar” venue is best known for its apothecary-style elixirs made from fresh herbs, spices and roots that he grows in Saitama.

As part of The Wavemaker Edit’s Island Alchemy series, this exclusive residency will present the whole works—immersive mixology events, bespoke cocktails and unforgettable island-inspired creations. Kick back to the sunset at SIP, the resort’s overwater cocktail bar, where you will be tended to by Kayama himself. Head to the WET Deck, where the residency will culminate with sweeping ocean views, a live DJ and Kayama’s inventive creations.

“The Wavemaker Edit was created to connect our guests with the people redefining culture around the world,” said general manager Amila Handunwala. “Hiroyasu Kayama embodies everything Island Alchemy stands for—creativity, craftsmanship, curiosity, and a genuine sense of discovery. Experiences like this become part of the island’s story, giving guests the chance to encounter extraordinary talent in a setting unlike anywhere else.”
