The new Vacheron Constantin Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin packs impressive high-performance metrics despite its svelte silhouette
In the sharp, buttoned-up world of fine dress watches, thin is always in. And not merely out of vanity as the best watches earn their place on more serious grounds than silhouette. Sartorial decorum demands that a dress watch serve higher purposes: to complement without dominating, to keep unerring time without drawing attention to itself, to exude assurance without announcing its presence. Most of all, it must never get in the way of a shirt cuff. On these counts, Vacheron Constantin’s new Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin makes a case for being one of the best dress watches you can arm yourself with this year. At 7.35mm in height, it is the thinnest Overseas ever made. Meanwhile, the 39.5mm case, bracelet, and clasp are rendered in platinum: a first for the Overseas collection. The alloy is thermally hardened to deliver 2.7 times the scratch and shock resistance of standard platinum.
The result is a supremely refined watch that really has no business being as durable as it is. The movement within asserts the watch’s technical gravitas. The newly developed in- house automatic Calibre 2550 took seven years of R&D for good reason. Measuring just 2.4mm in height, it delivers 80 hours of power reserve through an ingenious movement architecture.
Instead of a regular rotor, the watchmakers conceived a bidirectional micro-rotor in platinum and integrated it directly into the mainplate. The winding system is then paired with a double barrel to store the energy that delivers the impressive power reserve. More than a feat of miniaturisation, the ultra-thin Calibre 2550 demonstrates innovative engineering and out-of-the-box thinking.
Lean into it
As with all Overseas creations, the watch exudes refinement with a touch of sportiness. The salmon-lacquered sunburst centre, ringed by a velvet-finished minute track, carries associations that hark back to Vacheron Constantin’s 1940s archive, when the pairing of platinum and salmon was a recurring signature. The applied white gold hour markers and matching hands are spare without being austere, and the absence of any complication
beyond hours and minutes augments the watch’s effortless sophistication.
On the wrist, it rests as one would expect: comfortably and unobtrusively. The integrated platinum bracelet sits flush against the case, the half-Maltese-cross links with alternating polished and satin finishing catches light differently at every angle. Three interchangeable straps—a platinum
bracelet, beige rubber, and dark beige alligator—swap without tools, endowing the watch with all-occasion versatility.
Which brings us back to that shirt cuff. The Overseas Self-Winding Ultra-Thin slides beneath with room to spare, settles against the wrist, and proceeds to disappear—if you allow it—in the best possible sense. Limited to 255 individually numbered pieces, it asks the least of you while delivering more than its lean frame might suggest.
