Here, A. Lange & Söhne prioritises legibility and information alongside sophistication. The watch performs its time-telling duty with no fuss, while telling the wearer clearly how much power it has left, and at the same time exuding historically inspired gravitas.
The AB (down) and AUF (up) markers, drawn from Saxon precision watchmaking’s own vocabulary, indicate the movement’s well of 72-hour power reserve. What separates this reading from most power-reserve indicators is that the feature is directly integrated into the hand-wound calibre L051.2, driven by a planetary gear system designed specifically for the movement.
The two new editions: in 18k pink and white gold, are limited to 300 pieces each. Both trace their design lineage to historic Lange pocket watches: a railway-track minute scale, Arabic numerals, and a recessed central dial segment, set in these new editions against a blue dial rather than the model’s more familiar white or silver.
The argenté-coloured sub-dials and blued seconds hands offer beautiful contrast against the blue, while the lancet-shaped hour and minute hands are finished to match each case’s own gold. Measuring 37.5mm across, the case rests comfortably and unobtrusively on the wrist, paired with a reddish-brown strap for the pink-gold version and blue for the white.
Turn the watch over and Lange’s familiar attention to detail shines. The three-quarter plate in untreated German silver is a hallmark, the winding wheels carry visible solarisation, and a hand-engraved balance cock offers a final decorative flourish.
For those who are not familiar with the 1815 collection: the name refers to the birth year of Ferdinand Adolph Lange, whose vision to make the best German watches distinguished by precision, function, and elegance helped lay the foundation of his eponymous brand. Nearly two centuries on, that legacy ensues in this pair of handsome limited editions.
