Through the eyes of Maison&Objet Asia’s Designer of the Year
Design polymath Fu’s fingerprints can be found across a variety of creative projects the world over. The Maison&Objet Asia Designer of the Year 2016 recently launched Andre Fu Living, a lifestyle brand which includes fragrance, carpets and lifestyle accessories.
On design trends:
Things that are handcrafted will be a force this year. For example, stoneworks that are crafted and carved into specific shapes.
On Asian design:
I feel I belong to the new generation of Asian designers, whose work reflects the way we live. Asian cities today are very modern, dynamic and transient. Yet when we think back to our roots, there’s a sense of calmness and balance, a direct contrast to the life we lead today. My work is a response to that, with its focus on balance and comfort.
On his signature look:
I like things that have a sense of relaxed luxury. I like Sandro, Cos , Spencer Hart , Common Projects , Tod’s, Church’s. I’m into clothing that offers simplicity, structure and tailoring.
On collecting art:
I have a small collection. I love sculptures but lately I’ve acquired a few paintings as well. I love the work of Korean artist, Park Seo-bo – it’s fairly minimal and pure. Also the work of English painter Rita Ackermann who does chalkboard paintings.
On his next project:
The launch of Andre Fu Living has opened many doors for me. We launched a perfume called Fargesia and at Maison&Objet Singapore we previewed a bathroom fixture line called Skyliner. We’ll next be looking at glass.
