Here’s a treasure trove of some of Rudolf Nureyev’s most iconic and well-acclaimed ballet performances across the world

Alliance Française de Singapour is paying tribute to one of the most prolific names in dance with an exhibition named Dance: A Tribute to Rudolf Nureyev. As part of the cultural centre’s ongoing French excellence programme, the exhibition showcases 14 striking costumes hailing from Nureyev’s ballets, performed at some of the world’s most prestigious destinations – including the Paris Opera House.

Hailed as the “King of Dance”, Rudolf Nureyev serves as a muse for the French hub’s newest showcase. A series of talks, workshops and conferences will further encourage dialogue and help people gaina deeper understanding of Nureyev and the growth of ballet in the cultural landscape. Nureyev is one of the most lauded figures in ballet, making his debut with the Kirov Ballet aged 17, then going on to perform and choreograph ballets across the world.

The Paris Opera House used to be where one could find the legend’s works. Nureyev worked closely alongside Charles Jude; a protégé of Nureyev, and a former Étoile of the Paris Opera. Today, for the first time making its appearance in Singapore, a series of costumes from Jude’s private collection will be showcased.

And it isn’t just about the outlandish costumes. Throughout the duration of the exhibition, Alliance Française de Singapour will be hosting a dynamic series of workshops, talks and screenings, amalgamating some of the greatest talents in dance. Highlights include a conference exploring the role and legacy of Nureyev with close colleague, Charles Jude, and dancers from the Singapore Dance Theatre; French film screenings (including The White Crow, which tells the tale of Nureyev’s defection to the West); and a conference on costume design with international fashion consultant, Leonard Choo.
