A Concrete Tribute
Located by the Indian Ocean and just about an hour’s drive from Colombo lies the coastal district of Kalutara. It’s also where Anantara has carved a second home — the first being Anantara Peace Haven Tangalle Resort in the south — a beachside resort that sits at the mouth of the Kalu River.
Originally designed in 1995 by Sri Lanka’s most notable architect, the late Geoffrey Bawa, to connect the northern, eastern and western stretches of lagoon and beach as one, Anantara Kalutara Resort realises Bawa’s vision of a tropical island resort that fuses both Sri Lankan artistry and former Dutch colonial heritage. The hotel sports a gable roof that allows a free flow of air to both outdoor and indoor areas, along with terracotta half-round claytiles.
Facilities are aplenty for the family-friendly resort, but should you like to have some quiet time, make a beeline for the library. The quiet retreat has been dedicated to Bawa, framing several drawings from his archive, as well as some of his favourite designs in batik.
