Audemars Piguet is redesigning the Royal Oak Offshore for a new generation with new materials, colours, and movement architecture
The Royal Oak Offshore has never been easy to love. Well, not at first. When it debuted in 1993 as a muscular offshoot of Audemars Piguet’s original 1972 Royal Oak, its 42mm case and unusual thickness struck many as radically oversized, earning unflattering nicknames such as ‘beast’ and ‘whale’, and prompting accusations that it was a brutish departure from Royal Oak designer Gérald Genta’s sharper, more elegant original.
During the height of the recent watch boom, the Offshore was heavily promoted as a high-visibility status symbol, and when the market cooled, critics argued that parts of the collection had been propelled more by hype and social media exposure than by genuine collector conviction.
Three decades on, Audemars Piguet is reframing the Offshore on two fronts: on one side are 43mm flyback chronographs in titanium and ceramic; on the other is a new generation of 37mm references powered by a fresh in- house calibre and dressed in turquoise, hot pink, and light blue, with slimmer cases and diamond-set bezels.
Despite their differences in size and movement, the two new Royal Oak Offshore chronographs share a clear family resemblance. Both are automatic chronographs offering the same core functions: chronograph, hours, minutes, small seconds, and date. Both are driven by modern in- house, integrated column-wheel movements—Calibre 6401 in the 37mm and Calibre 4401 in the 43mm—beating at 4Hz, with power reserves of 55 and 70 hours respectively. Each calibre is showcased through a sapphire caseback and finished to full high watchmaking standards.
Audemars Piguet also treats materials and design language consistently across the pair. Each model features sharp contrasts, combining titanium with ceramic or precious metals and finishing these components with the same care normally reserved for gold.
The aesthetic is equally coherent: both watches debut contemporary, colour-forward executions, pairing Méga Tapisserie dials in summer tones with matching inner bezels and coordinated straps. Those straps are interchangeable, in rubber or textured calfskin, and fasten with titanium Audemars Piguet pin buckles, lending a sense of versatility and everyday wearability. Above all, the duo is framed by Audemars Piguet as a fresh expression of the original Offshore’s daring, slightly provocative spirit, now channelled through slimmer, more ergonomic cases that still preserve the collection’s bold technical identity.
Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding Chronograph 43mm
The new Royal Oak Offshore duo feels designed less for the display case than for an active life. One arrives in Audemars Piguet’s Bleu Nuit, Nuage 50 ceramic, accented with titanium details that lend the deep blue case a cooler, more contemporary edge. The name derives from the original colour code used for the 1972 Royal Oak Jumbo dial—a dark navy blue deepened by the addition of black pigment (cloud 50) over a blue base.
That deep blue extends to the textured calfskin strap, which gives the watch an everyday ease that carries you from a business lunch to an evening in the city without effort. The beige Méga Tapisserie dial, lifted by blue accents, softens the overall look with a warm, sun-washed contrast that feels well suited to summer, particularly when it catches the late afternoon light.
Its counterpart is more athletic, pairing a titanium case with a black ceramic bezel, pushers, and crown for a mood that reads as rugged and performance-driven. The smoked green PVD Méga Tapisserie dial, sharpened with black and beige details, brings an earthy, utilitarian quality, while the grey-green rubber strap reinforces the sense of a timepiece built for motion rather than ceremony.
Beneath the surface, both watches are powered by Audemars Piguet’s in-house flyback chronograph Calibre 4401, visible through the sapphire caseback, where the blackened oscillating weight and refined finishing add a quiet note of mechanical theatre. That blend of technical muscle and decorative finesse is central to their appeal: sports watches conceived for people who care as much about aesthetics as they do about movement architecture.
Taken together, the two 43mm Royal Oak Offshore chronographs capture a more expressive side of luxury watchmaking. They still carry the collection’s trademark boldness, but here it is filtered through a lifestyle-oriented lens: one watch dressed in deep marine blue, the other in smoky green and black. These are watches made for collectors who want their timepiece to project personality and feel at home in the everyday rhythm of their lives.
Royal Oak Offshore 37mm
Audemars Piguet brings its new Calibre 6401 to the 37mm Royal Oak Offshore line in three colourful references that combine titanium or 18k pink gold. Developed entirely in-house over five years, the movement first appeared in the Royal Oak Chronograph collection earlier this year and now enters the Offshore family, replacing Calibre 2385, which had been a mainstay of the manufacture since 1997.
Designed for both comfort and legibility, Calibre 6401 is slimmer than its predecessor and visible through a sapphire caseback, offering a clearer view of its refined decoration and rhodium-toned, 22k pink gold oscillating weight. Like Calibre 2385, it is a selfwinding, integrated column- wheel chronograph with Audemars Piguet’s patented vertical clutch system. A simplified architecture reduces the component count and eliminates unnecessary play, resulting in a movement that is more robust, reliable, and responsive.
The arrival of Calibre 6401 also brings meaningful changes to the 37mm Royal Oak Offshore Selfwinding Chronograph. For the first time in the collection, two of the new references are crafted in titanium—one of them with a diamond-set bezel—while the third comes in 18k pink gold, also set with diamonds. The case is slightly thinner than before and features a bezel curved from 6 to 12 o’clock, redesigned pusher guards, a reworked Tapisserie pattern with larger squares, and a date display relocated to 6 o’clock for better balance and legibility.
More broadly, these new watches revive the daring, provocative spirit of the Offshore’s 1993 debut. Designed by Emmanuel Gueit and inspired by the visual excess of the 1980s and high-performance yacht racing, the original Royal Oak Offshore earned its ‘beast’ nickname honestly. This latest trio channels that same energy into a smaller, lighter, and more wearable format, balancing technical performance with colour, fine detailing, and a holiday-ready attitude.
