Winemakers and friends, Caroline Frey and Peter Gago, create a blend of French tradition and innovative Australian spirit

Grange La Chapelle 2021 combines the attributes of French syrah and Australian shiraz, two expressions with a shared ancestry

Beautiful things happen when we embrace cultural diversity—open minds, empathy and for the wine lover’s benefit, the newly launched Grange La Chapelle 2021.

Thanks to a long-standing friendship between Caroline Frey, the chief winemaker and vigneron at La Chapelle, and Peter Gago, the chief winemaker who oversees the Penfolds Grange collection, an unexpected union across two hemispheres has arrived. By marrying the rich heritage of French wine tradition with the innovative spirit of Australian craft, they have combined the attributes of French syrah and Australian shiraz—two expressions that share a common ancestry, but have evolved into distinctive styles due to their respective terroirs.

The result is a pure varietal expression of equal parts La Chapelle France from the steep, sun-drenched slopes of the Hill of Hermitage, and Grange from select South Australian vineyards that include Barossa Valley, McLaren Vale and Clare Valley. Bold yet elegant, and defined by notes of black cherry, pomegranate and raspberry, the Grange La Chapelle 2021 blend offers a first taste of the shared history of syrah and shiraz, and future vintages, if Mother Nature permits.
